Chapter 159
And then I can’t hold it in anymore.
Tears spill down my cheeks, warm and fast. My shoulders shake as I bury my face against his chest.
“I’m… I’m happy,” I whisper through sobs, a laugh bubbling in between. He exhales shakily, holding me closer, rocking me slightly as if to reassure himself too.
“Me too, Aurora. I’m happy too…”
Nico pulls back a little, breath rattling like he’s carrying the weight of the whole world. He tucks my hair behind my ear and then sighs. He runs a hand over his face and lets out a long, low sigh.
“I know I’m gonna regret saying this,” he murmurs, voice rough, “but–someone’s been visiting you every day.
“My heart does a stupid, hopeful flip. For a second my brain fills with one name and a dozen
impossible images.
Is it him? Is it–Nico catches the exact change on my face and his expression goes half–funny, half–serious. He reaches up and cups my cheeks.
“If he even breathes in the wrong direction,” Nico says, deadpan, “you call one of us. We’ll smack
him with an oxygen tank or shove a clipboard down his throat. Hell, I’ll personally make him wish
he’d never learned how to walk.
“I can’t help it – a watery laugh bubbles out of me ridiculous and relieved. Nico’s lips twitch into a
small, fond smile and he ruffles my hair, gentle enough it feels like a promise.
“Alright?” he asks.
―
“Alright,” I whisper. He leaves the room and there are muffled voices outside the door – a scrape of shoes, someone saying my name in the distance, words that come like waves I can’t quite hear
over the beat of the monitor.
The door swings open, and… there he is.
Damion.
For a heartbeat, he just stands there, eyes fixed one. His chest rises and falls fast, like he’s
weighing something impossible in his mind.
I bite my lip, heart hammering. “Damion?” He swallows hard, mutters under his breath, almost inaudible–then louder, in Spanish, voice rough and determined: “¡Que se joda!” (Fuck it!)And just like that, the hesitation melts away. He bolts forward.
I stumble backward in my bed a little in shock, and hen he’s there–arms wrapping around me with reckless, protective force. I tumble into his enrace, shoulders shaking, tears spilling down

“I… I thought-“he pants, holding me tighter. “Oh, God–Estrella, I thought-”
“I’m okay,” I gasp between sobs, clutching his shirt. “I’m okay now.
“He squeezes me tighter, pressing his forehead lightly to mine. “I’m never leaving you. Ever again.
“I let out a shaky laugh, burying my face against him. “I… I’m so glad you came. I needed you here.
“For a moment, silence surrounds us–just the sound of our breaths, the quiet of the hospital
room.
“I came and visited. Every day,” he says, rubbing his hand on the back of his neck, almost as if nervous, a small blush creeping onto his face. “I remember back there you said you loved flowers…
So…”
He turns his head towards a table near the wall and that’s when I see them.
Flowers. Hundreds of them.
I blink, a small, stunned smile tugging at my lips.
“You… you remembered?“He smirks faintly, clearing his throat as if to hide the gentle flush. “Of
course I remembered. Don’t think I’d let you see a hospital without a little color.
“I laugh as he grabs my hand.
“But I owe you. My whole… life. If I’d never met you… I don’t even want to think about that.
