Andy had already returned and clearly had information, so she might as well go upstairs and hear it firsthand. Investigating on her own would take time anyway.
Arabella gritted her teeth silently. Andy clearly wanted to report it right here earlier. That infuriating Matthew! There was nothing for it–she had to go up.
“Dr. Hamilton, did you need something?” Andy asked softly, noticing her hesitation.
Arabella looked back at him and forced a polite smile. “No, nothing.”
“Oh, alright. Shall we go in, then?” Andy replied.
Shaking her head slightly, she followed him inside, but Andy couldn’t help muttering in confusion, “I thought I heard Dr. Hamilton call my name just now… Must have misheard.”
The corner of Arabella’s mouth twitched slightly, and her quiet resentment toward Matthew deepened another notch.
Still, she had no choice but to follow Andy to the executive elevator.
Soon, they arrived at Matthew’s spacious, minimalist office.
As soon as she entered, Arabella’s eyes landed on her painting–now professionally framed and hanging prominently on his office
wall.
“Why is that hanging here?” Arabella was stunned.
She had thought he took the painting just to tease her. She never imagined he would actually display it–and in his office, of all places!
Matthew was the picture of calm. “Why shouldn’t it be?“.
“Because…” Arabella’s words caught in her throat. She instinctively glanced at Andy, who was pretending to be very interested in a
bookshelf.
Walking closer to Matthew, Arabella lowered her voice, “You know perfectly well what happened when I painted that. I…”
Remembering that deeply awkward moment by the waterfall, a faint warmth crept into her cheeks.
Matthew looked at her, a hint of playful amusement in his eyes. “What happened ‘when you painted that‘?”
“You know exactly what I mean,” she shot back, glaring at him with a mixture of embarrassment and indignation.
He clearly knew everything, yet here he was, pretending innocence,
“You-!” Arabella was too flustered to articulate it. How could she possibly say it out loud?
“I simply thought it was a very well–executed piece, and I happen to like it. Don’t read too much into it, Dr. Hamilton,” Matthew said as he walked over and settled into one of the plush armchairs by the coffee table. “Have a seat. Let’s hear what Andy has to say.”
The corner of Arabella’s mouth twitched again. Yeah, right. I’m sure that’s the only reason.

He had access to works by world–renowned artists–why would he want her amateur sketch, and why hang it so prominently?
Catching Matthew’s subtle nod, Andy began his report. “Dr. Hamilton, here’s what we know so far. It appears this incident was a targeted attempt against you.”
“Against me?” Arabella’s eyes darkened.
So her suspicion was correct–this wasn’t an accident.
“Yes,” Andy confirmed, his expression growing more serious. “According to the driver’s initial statement before he lost consciousness, he was paid to cause the collision.”
“By whom?” Arabella’s tone turned icy.
Andy sighed slightly. “He passed out before he could give a name.”
So they still didn’t have the key detail.
“He lost consciousness?” Arabella was puzzled.
They were all relatively fine. How did the driver end up in worse shape?
Seeming to read her thoughts, Andy explained, “The truck was knocked off course by the impact with Mr. Stewart’s vehicle and crashed into the roadside landscaping. The driver sustained a head injury. He’s been transported to the hospital.”
“Have the authorities been notified?” Arabella asked further.
“Yes, we filed a report immediately. However, unless the driver regains consciousness and is able to speak, the investigation will likely stall,” Andy speculated.
Arabella nodded in grim agreement. “That seems probable.”
If the official investigation hit a wall, she’d have to look into it herself.
“Have our team look into it. I want answers as soon as possible.” Matthew’s cold, authoritative voice cut through her thoughts just as they formed.
“Yes, sir. I’ll assign our most discreet investigators immediately,” Andy responded.
“Also, post people at the hospital. If any suspicious individuals show up, detain them for questioning,” Matthew instructed.
Andy tested his understanding. “You’re concerned the person behind this might try to… ensure the driver doesn’t talk?”
“We can’t dismiss the possibility,” Matthew said, his gaze turning steely. “If they show their face, we’ll have them right there.”
“I’ll put our most trusted people on it,” Andy assured him.
A thin, cold smile touched Matthew’s lips. “Anyone who dares to attempt murder in broad daylight should be prepared to pay the price.”
The atmosphere in the room grew charged and intimidating. Arabella couldn’t help studying Matthew’s profile, a strange, unfamiliar sensation quietly stirring within her.
For some reason, seeing him take command like this suddenly gave her an unexpected sense of security.

For someone as fiercely independent as she was, this feeling was… unusual.
“Anything to add, Dr. Hamilton?” Matthew asked, turning his attention back to her.
“No,” Arabella replied simply.
His arrangements were thorough and decisive. For the first time in a situation like this, she didn’t feel the immediate, overwhelming need to take control herself.
Matthew gave Andy a final nod. “Proceed with the arrangements.”
“Yes, sir.” Andy turned and strode briskly out of the office.
“Do you have any leads on who might be responsible?” Matthew asked Arabella once they were alone.
Arabella shook her head slowly. “Nothing concrete comes to mind yet.”

The only people with a clear motive to harm her were the Clarks, but given their current business crisis, Calvin and Freya probably didn’t have the bandwidth to orchestrate something like this..
As for anyone else… she truly couldn’t think of anyone.
“Then we’ll wait for the investigation results,” Matthew said, his eyes narrowing slightly in thought. “If it’s feasible for the next few days, have Alfred accompany you when you go out.”
“Huh?” Arabella looked at Matthew, confused. What did he mean?
“The perpetrator might try to silence the driver, but they could also make another attempt on you directly,” Matthew explained calmly.
Understanding his meaning, Arabella nodded. “I see. I’ll be careful.”

I started the novel with great interest. In the beginning the storyline was captivating. Then I feel that the more the story advances, the twists were no longer great. Moreover I don't like Arabella s personality, cold, distant......
