People kept coming over to chat, and little by little, the group got surrounded.
Arabella found the whole scene rather tedious. While no one was paying attention, she slipped away from the crowd and found a quiet corner to settle into.
“Who’s that girl? She came with Mr. Stewart, right?” someone murmured under their breath.
“Ugh, who else? Just another gold digger trying to latch onto a rich guy,” came a dismissive reply.
“Do you actually know her?” another asked curiously–none of them had seen Arabella before tonight.
“Of course I do. She’s the impostor my mom had kicked out. Her real family’s from some rundown rural town, but she’s too proud to go back. Now she and her deadbeat brother go around scamming people,” Harper remarked with a sneer.
“Seriously? She doesn’t look the type,” someone voiced doubt.
Harper shrugged. “Come on, if you’re going to scam someone, you’ve got to look the part. I bet everything she’s wearing is rented.”
“But she arrived with Mr. Stewart. There’s no way she’s what you’re describing,” another
insisted.
“What do you know? She’s clearly got some tricks up her sleeve. God knows how she managed to fool Mr. Stewart. Otherwise, how would someone like her even get in here?” Harper said confidently.
Hearing Harper sound so sure of herself, a few in the group began to waver.
“I heard Mr. Stewart is trying to break off his engagement to the Hamilton heiress… Is it because of her?”
“Now that you mention it, maybe it is!”
Harper didn’t miss a beat. “It’s definitely because of her. She’s totally manipulating him.”
“Ugh, if he left the Hamilton girl for someone better, fine. But losing to a scheming nobody? No one’s going to just stand by and watch that happen.”
Fueled by irritation, one of the women marched straight over to Arabella.

“You’re the one who got kicked out of the Macdonalds‘ place, aren’t you?” she demanded, looking down her nose.
Arabella glanced up, puzzled. “Do I know you?”
“You don’t need to know me. What you need to know is that you’re not good enough for Mr. Stewart. Leave him alone. Now.”
Arabella almost laughed. “If I’m not good enough, does that mean you are?”
“You-!” The woman flushed, glaring angrily. “Just have some self–respect and stop clinging to Mr. Stewart!”
Arabella’s expression cooled. “I think you’re the one who needs a little self–awareness. What I do is none of your business.”
Being attacked out of nowhere–she figured she was being pretty polite not to make a bigger
scene.
“Stop acting innocent. Did you really think we wouldn’t find out? Some broke girl pretending to be a socialite?” another woman chimed in, backing her friend up.
Arabella shot her a look and smirked. “Let me guess… another one of Matthew’s admirers who wants me out of the picture?”
The woman’s face stiffened, and she stumbled over her words. “We just don’t like people pretending to be something they’re not.”
“Really?” Arabella raised an eyebrow. “Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this a finance industry gala? Or did it suddenly turn into some kind of debutante ball?”
“That doesn’t matter. You should just leave!”
“Yeah, you’re lowering the tone of the whole event.”
“If you won’t leave on your own, we’ll call security to have you removed!”
More people joined in, ganging up on Arabella as though being near her was somehow embarrassing.
Arabella simply smiled, then raised her voice clearly. “Security!”
The women paled. “What are you doing?!”
“Just helping you out. Weren’t you the ones who wanted security?” Arabella replied innocently.

“You-!” They exchanged panicked looks, completely thrown off by her unexpected move.
The commotion finally drew the attention of others nearby.
Matthew strode over, his brow furrowed. “What’s going on here?”
He knew Arabella didn’t know these people–how had they ended up crowding around her?
Arabella flashed a sweet, effortless smile. “Mr. Stewart, they were talking about calling security. I thought I’d save them the trouble.”
Matthew’s gaze sharpened slightly. That smile of hers was almost distracting.
“Why would anyone need to call security?” Edward cut in, stepping forward.
He glanced at Arabella, knowing full well the situation wasn’t as simple as she made it sound.
“Yes, why would you need security?” Arabella echoed, blinking her large, guileless eyes.
The women’s faces shifted between pale and sickly green. None seemed able to form a

reply.
The group flinched. One of them finally cracked under the pressure.
“Because she’s a fraud! She’s just here to scam people. We wanted her gone.”
“She’s a total fake. She doesn’t belong at an event like this.”
“Mr. Stewart, you shouldn’t let her fool you anymore. Her family’s from some poor backwater town. She’s not a real socialite–not even close.”
Matthew’s expression darkened. This was beyond ridiculous.
“Poor backwater town? Broke?” Ethan let out a disbelieving chuckle. “Where on earth did you hear that nonsense?”
If the Hamiltons were “from a poor town” and “broke“, then what did that make everyone else in the city?
“It’s not nonsense,” someone insisted. “We heard it from a member of the Macdonald family- the people she used to live with.”

I started the novel with great interest. In the beginning the storyline was captivating. Then I feel that the more the story advances, the twists were no longer great. Moreover I don't like Arabella s personality, cold, distant......
