Chapter 27
The other side of Valentina’s face swelled up immediately.
She realized then that Nicholas had lost all sense of reason. No amount of explanation would matter now.
But she refused to accept it. Refused to die here–to throw her life away for someone she’d barely even met.
Under the threat of death, adrenaline surged through her body. She tore herself free from his grip and began fighting back with everything she had.
She clawed at him, bit into his skin, and screamed.
“She killed herself! Why should I have to die for her? Why?! She’s the one who couldn’t handle it–she’s the one who gave up! What does that have to do with me?!”
“All I did was tell her the truth! If it wasn’t for ME, she would’ve spent the rest of her life in the dark! Her legs were destroyed, her whole life ruined—and she would’ve been LIED TO by her cheating husband for the rest of it! Ha! How pathetic is that?!”
“I was SAVING her! Don’t you get it?! If it wasn’t for me, she’d still be suffering–still listening to your disgusting lies! That’s a fate worse than death!”
Every word was a dagger piercing through Nicholas’s chest.
His mind went blank. All he could hear was her shrill voice, echoing endlessly inside his skull.
His hands, which had been gripping her so tightly, suddenly went limp. They dropped to his sides like dead weight.
The moment she was free, Valentina realized she’d struck a nerve. She grew bolder. More vicious.
“You think I killed her? Wrong! YOU’re the one who killed Elara Kingston!”
“What am I to her, huh? A stranger she met once? The person she really hated was YOU–the man who shared her bed every night, the man she trusted!”
“You’re the one who betrayed her. You’re the one who broke her heart. That’s why she gave up! You’re the real murderer here–so why are you trying to pin this all on me?!”
“That poor, stupid girl. She lost both her legs because of a scumbag like you–and then she was stupid enough to kill herself over you! Ha ha ha ha! You two really are a perfect match–both completely insane!”
“You flirted with me while clinging to your guilt! You drove your wife to suicide and now you won’t even own up to it–you want to drag me down with you! You’re not a man, you’re a pathetic worm!!”
“If you really want to avenge her, then YOU should be the one to die! Go ahead! Do it now! Maybe you’ll catch up to her! And when you get to heaven, you can cry and beg for her forgiveness–and maybe, just maybe, she’ll be dumb enough to forgive you!”
Valentina spat out every venomous thought she’d been holding inside.
Then, seeing Nicholas slumped in his seat like a broken puppet, she shoved him aside, slammed her hand on the unlock button.
The locks disengaged with a sharp *heep*. She threw the door open and tumbled out of the car, running blindly into the darkness.
This was an old mountain road–abandoned for years.

Chapter 27
If you kept going just a few dozen yards past where Nicholas had parked, you’d reach the edge of a cliff, where a landslide had torn the road clean away.
Valentina’s legs were shaking. She stumbled forward until she reached the edge–and froze.
There was no road ahead.
Her heart leapt into her throat.
A deranged Nicholas behind her, a sheer drop in front.
Her mind raced–and then, suddenly, blinding white light flooded the darkness behind her.
She didn’t need to turn around. She knew it was him.
If he caught her, she was dead.
That thought sent a jolt of terror through her. She glanced to the side–at the dark forest barely visible through the thick underbrush–and jumped.
She crashed into the ground below. Thank God, it was soft earth, cushioned with pine needles.
But her leg had struck a jagged rock. The bone was definitely broken.
Back on the road, the car that had been heading straight for the cliff didn’t slow down.
There was a series of deafening crashes–metal crumpling, glass shattering.
Then the vehicle.tumbled down the steep slope.
A massive explosion followed. Flames erupted into the night sky, lighting up the entire hillside.
And in that fiery glow, Valentina’s eyes–wide with disbelief.
