Chapter 5
I spun around instinctively.
Ruby was already crumpled on the hallway floor.
Before I could react, the butt of the gun cracked against the back of my skull and everything went dark.
When I woke up, Ruby and I were zip-tied in some run-down warehouse.
Ruby was quietly sobbing. “Who are you? What do you want with us…”
One scarred-up asshole slapped her across the face.
“Your piece-of-shit fiancé Vincent, that’s what! Son of a bitch muscled in on my West Side operation and fucked up my business!”
So it was the West Side gang.
Vincent had just snatched that territory using my settlement paperwork.
Lucky for me, they didn’t know who I was, but Ruby-who’d been all over town with Vincent lately-was their main
target.
I quietly flexed my wrists, using the razor blade tucked under my nail art to saw through the zip-ties.
Years in this game taught me to always have backup plans.
That scarface man assumed I was just some unlucky gambler and spit near my feet.
“Sucks to be you. Call your family, get us five mil, you go home tonight.”
Ruby broke down in tears. “I’m so sorry I got you into this. But don’t worry-my fiancé really powerful. He’ll come
save us!”
The way her face lit up with complete trust when she talked about Vincent.
I kept my mouth shut and worked faster on the restraints.
Scarface couldn’t reach Vincent and kicked over a gas can in frustration.
“Motherfucker won’t answer his phone? Maybe I need to send him a little ‘wake-up gift’ he can’t ignore.”
He scooped up a switchblade, his eyes roaming over Ruby with a twisted glint.

“Saw you two at the hospital earlier. You’re knocked up with his kid, right? Perfect Leag mail it to daddy!”
My blood went cold.
She was carrying Vincent’s kid.
Ruby froze in terror. “No, please! Don’t hurt my baby!”
His buddies started snickering and moving toward her.
That’s when I broke free, launched myself forward, and drove my elbow into Scarface’s throat
Snatched his blade, cut Ruby loose, and shoved her into the corner behind me.
“Fucking Bitch! Kill her!” Scarface gasped, clutching his neck.
Half a dozen guys came at us swinging crowbars and pipes.
I knew how to fight, but with my body still wrecked from the injuries, facing a pack of desperate things and seriously outnumbered.
Metal connected with my ribs and spine, and the severe pain almost made me kneel on the grounČ.
All I could do was take the beating and keep Ruby protected in that corner.
Scarface lost his patience, chambered a round, and aimed at my head.
“Time to die, shut?”
Right as he squeezed the trigger
The warehouse doors blew apart!
