The maid gave Oliver an apologetic look. “Sorry. We’re not allowed to use our phones while we’re working.”
Oliver didn’t give up. “What about a computer? Can I play on one?”
She nodded right away. “Of course. Just a moment, I’ll get one for you.”
In no time, she set a high-end laptop in front of him. Oliver flipped it open and started typing away, his fingers moving quickly and confidently.
...
Madeline had just finished dinner with Noah when her phone started ringing.
There hadn’t been a single quiet moment all night.
She walked over and picked up. “Hello?”
“You need to come to the hospital. Right now,” Dr. Hester said, his voice tense and rushed.
Madeline frowned. “What’s so urgent? What happened?”
“Just come. I’ll explain when you get here.”
He didn’t give her a chance to ask anything else, just hung up.
Madeline stared at her phone, baffled. Dr. Hester didn’t sound like there was an emergency with any patients, so why the rush?
She kept thinking about it, and suddenly, Julian’s cold, intense face flashed through her mind.
Her heart jumped.
No way... He couldn’t have recognized her, right?
It didn’t seem possible. She’d been wearing a mask all day. There was no way he could have figured it out that easily.
So what was going on?
She couldn’t make sense of it. Still, Dr. Hester was the hospital director. She couldn’t just ignore his call.
“Oliver, Mommy has to go out for a bit. Be good at home, okay? If someone you don’t know knocks, don’t open the door.”
Noah pressed his lips together, shook off his surprise, then nodded. “Noah.”
Oliver blinked a few times. So, his brother was the quiet type.
He jumped right back in. “Mommy thought you were me and brought you home.”
Noah glanced around at Oliver’s background and caught on fast. “Looks like my daddy thought you were me and took you home too.”
“Yeah. We can talk about that later. Mommy said you’re older than me, so you’re my big brother. Where’s Mommy?”
Noah answered, “She went to the hospital. It sounded like something urgent.”
“Oh no.” Oliver’s face fell. “I’m too late.”
Noah looked concerned. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s complicated. I think Daddy found out about Mommy. He looked really mad. I’m worried he might do something to her.”
Noah’s expression turned even more serious. He remembered all the things Helene, that mean lady, used to whisper near him on purpose. He knew his parents didn’t get along.
