The first time she’d set foot in a casino was in Country Y. That had been three years ago. No wonder she was so out of practice now. The rules, the rhythm, all of it felt like a distant memory.
Josh couldn’t help but mutter a curse under his breath. Here they were, a bunch of grown men basically ganging up on one woman. It didn’t feel fair at all.
He glanced back at Julian, who looked completely unfazed, as if none of this was his problem.
Julian, seriously? You’re just going to sit there and let this happen to your wife?
Through the thick swirl of smoke, Julian’s eyes narrowed. Madeline didn’t even know how to play, and yet here she was, making bold bets like she owned the place. Where did she even get that kind of confidence?
Josh felt a little bad about it, honestly. But she was the one who insisted on playing. A loss was a loss. He wasn’t about to go easy on her.
“Ms. Monroe, I already warned you. You lost. How are you planning to pay up the ten million?” Josh grinned at her. “Why don’t you ask Julian for help? Bet he’d cover you if you just asked.”
“Yeah, just ask Julian, Ms. Monroe. Come on, if you do, I’m sure he’ll pay it for you,” Brady chimed in from the side, trying to nudge her along.
Madeline looked over at Julian.
Ask him for help? Not a chance.
Josh was convinced there was no way Madeline could cough up ten million on her own. He figured she’d have to give in and ask Julian, and for someone like Julian, that much money was pocket change.
He could see it clearly. Both of them were just too proud for their own good.
If Madeline would just swallow her pride and turn to Julian, this whole thing would be over already.
Julian watched her in silence. With what she made as a doctor, there was no way she could pay that kind of money. Still, she had the black card he’d given her. If she used it, he’d count it as her admitting defeat, and he’d let it go.
He was still thinking that when Madeline’s calm voice broke the silence. “Your account number.”
Josh hesitated, but eventually rattled off his account number. Madeline pulled out her phone, and just like that, ten million appeared in Josh’s account.
Josh stared at his phone in disbelief, a cigarette hanging from his lips. He glanced at Madeline, genuinely surprised.
So who did it come from? Casey? Was it Casey’s money?
He almost forgot, Casey was loaded.
She’d rather use Casey’s money than his?
A bitter snrer escaped Julian. He took a long drink, then another, and another, as if he could drown the anger burning inside him. The more he drank, the worse it got.
Madeline, meanwhile, quietly replayed the last round in her mind. Then she looked up, calm as ever. “There are still two rounds left. Let’s keep going.”
“You really want to keep playing? Are you just here to hand out money?” Josh asked, starting to feel a bit awkward about winning so easily.
He was about to try and talk her out of it, but Madeline cut him off. “That’s my concern, Josh. Let’s keep going.”
Josh let out a sigh. He’d tried to warn her. If she didn’t want to listen, there was nothing else he could do.
