Julian arched an eyebrow, glancing over his shoulder at Madeline. She’d heard Miles too, and the tension in her chest was impossible to ignore.
Julian gave her a long, searching look. Everything went quiet around them. Madeline could only hear his cold little scoff before he turned away, tossing out, “Let’s go meet him,” as he walked off.
Madeline’s heart jumped. It had to be Casey. She rushed to follow, but Julian spun around and blocked her path.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“Are you actually going to fight him?”
Julian’s brow lifted, just a bit. “Why not? He’s practically asking for it.”
Madeline let out a dry laugh. “If you two really fight, you might now come out on top.”
His eyes narrowed, icy and sharp. “Then tell me. Who is your preferred winner?”
“Casey.” The word was out before she could stop herself.
Julian’s whole attitude shifted. That lazy, casual air vanished, replaced by something dark and dangerous. “Madeline, you have a real talent for driving me crazy.”
Her heart sank as she caught the look on his face. Every instinct told her now was not the time to push him.
“Stay here.” His voice was cold.
The door slammed shut, and just like that, she was locked inside. Madeline started pacing, nerves buzzing. After a second, she dashed to the little window and pressed up against the glass, trying to see outside.
Julian didn’t blink. “She’s my wife. You want me to just hand her over to you? That’s cute.”
At that, Casey’s face twisted, every bit of his anger coming to the surface. “Wife? Do you really think you deserve to call her that? You’ve got some nerve.”
“Whether I deserve her or not is none of your business.”
The tension between them was suffocating. Their men stood frozen, glancing at each other, unsure what would happen next. Overhead, thick clouds blotted out the moon, making the night feel even heavier.
Miles felt a chill run down his spine. With the way things looked, if a fight really broke out, nobody would win.
Just then, a figure awkwardly hoisted herself out the little window, clutching a pair of oversized pants. Madeline landed on the deck with a thump, nearly losing her balance as she scrambled to keep the pants from sliding off.
