Madeline raised her eyebrows. She wasn’t imagining things. That look Julian gave her just now was anything but innocent.
Julian brushed her hand away. “Get out of the car. Don’t make me ask twice.”
He didn’t wait for a response and stepped out.
Madeline glanced outside, sighed, and followed him.
Inside the villa, Helene had been waiting. The moment she heard the car in the driveway, she hurried out, her eyes landing on Julian… and then on Madeline.
She slowed, her smile faltering as the situation registered.
Madeline walked in behind Julian, passing right by Helene. Helene glared at her, the kind of glare that could burn holes through steel.
She knew Madeline never intended to leave, and everything had been a setup. Helene had fallen for it, thinking she could push Madeline out and win Julian back for herself. Now she was stuck watching them walk in together.
If looks could kill, Madeline would have been shredded on the spot.
Helene quickly plastered on a fake smile and slipped her arm through Julian’s. “Julian, why did you bring Ms. Monroe back?”
Julian looked down at Helene’s hand on his arm, his brow creasing for just a second. He noticed Madeline standing behind them but didn’t shake Helene off. His answer was cool and distant. “She’s useful.”
Helene shot Madeline a warning glare, holding Julian’s arm even tighter as if to prove a point, then followed him inside.
Madeline stayed where she was for a moment, sighing under her breath. “I must have been a real piece of work in my last life to have earned these two as my karma.”
Miles, who’d been standing nearby, heard every word and couldn’t help smirking.
Maybe next time Mrs. Grayson should make sure he isn’t in earshot before she starts complaining about Julian.
He gestured politely. “This way, Mrs. Grayson.”
Madeline shot him a look. “Don’t call me that. If Helene hears, she’ll probably kill you with her glare.”
She walked in, bracing herself.
Standing in the doorway, Madeline looked around. She’d lived here for three years, and the memories still lingered, no matter how hard she tried to ignore them.
Helene closed the door behind them and spun around, her expression dark. With no one else around, she dropped the act, marched right up to Madeline, and raised her hand for a slap. “Madeline, you bitch—”
A sharp slap cut through the room. The sound was loud enough to echo.
Helene staggered back, holding her cheek, completely stunned. She clearly hadn’t expected Madeline to move so fast.
“Madeline, this is the Grayson house. How could you hit me?”
Madeline flexed her sore hand and stared her down. “Does it hurt?”
Helene’s eyes narrowed.
“It should. That was for my child.”
