Madeline took the dress from the hanger and immediately noticed the tag was still attached. It was brand new.
She looked at the style, and her eyebrows arched in surprise.
Helene and Madeline couldn’t have had more different tastes. Helene loved clothes that stood out, bold and flashy, while Madeline always leaned toward something simpler and a little more classy. This entire closet, though, was filled with pieces that screamed Madeline, not Helene.
Actually, this brand used to be one of Madeline’s favorites. Back when she was Mrs. Grayson, she didn’t even have to shop for herself. Every season, the brand would deliver the newest collection right to her door.
Julian might have ignored her emotionally, but he never held back when it came to spending. She always had the latest clothes and jewelry, nothing but the best.
She just never expected that, even after five years apart, this routine hadn’t changed.
That’s why the whole walk-in closet be filled with this one brand, every item in her exact size.
She glanced around the room. The decor hadn’t changed at all since she left five years ago. It didn’t look like anyone new had moved in.
So, Helene had never actually lived here.
Madeline shot Helene a cool, knowing smile but didn’t bother calling her out. Instead, she headed off to change.
When she came back out, Helene had to force her jaw shut. Somehow, even the plainest dress looked elegant and expensive when Madeline wore it.
Helene glared at her, unable to hide her annoyance. “Madeline, when are you finally going to get that divorce with Julian?”
Madeline paused, one foot already out the door, and turned to look at her. “Why, are you in a rush?”
Helene frowned. Of course she was. Her engagement party with Julian was next month, and she was tired of being labeled the other woman. Worse, if Julian and Madeline weren’t divorced by then, what if Madeline showed up at the party and caused a scene as his legal wife?
She pulled out her phone and made a call. “It’s me. Two million if you help me with something. If you get it done, I’ll add another three…”
Downstairs, Julian had taken off his jacket and was sitting on the sofa in just his shirt. He looked relaxed, his face unreadable.
Madeline’s footsteps on the stairs caught his attention. He glanced up, and their eyes met for a split second.
In the soft light, his gaze was calm, but when he looked at Madeline, his eyes seemed to linger, a flicker of surprise and admiration passing through them.
There was no denying Madeline’s beauty. She was the kind of woman you couldn’t help but notice.
Helene came down after her, just in time to see Julian watching Madeline. Her fists clenched at her sides. In her mind, she chewed Madeline out. She’s gonna make sure Madeline get what she deserved.
