Madeline had a feeling Julian might have someone watching her, so she called Oliver’s school and asked for a few days off for him. It seemed safer for him to stay home for now. As for herself, she still had to show up at the office.
She’d barely slept a wink last night, so her energy was running on fumes. As soon as she stepped into her office, she asked her assistant to bring her a coffee.
Brenda caught sight of her and rushed in, full of concern. “Madeline, you’re seriously dedicated. Look at those dark circles. Did Julian do something to you last night?”
“He didn’t. I just couldn’t sleep,” Madeline said, brushing it off. “How are you, though? You got dragged into this. I’m sorry. You must have been scared.”
Brenda shook her head, looking guilty. “Don’t be. I should be the one apologizing. I couldn’t get away, and Julian caught me. You had to come back to deal with it.”
Madeline took a long drink of coffee. “It’s not your fault. Escaping from Julian isn’t exactly easy. Let’s not talk about him. Whether he’s in our lives or not, we still have to keep going. How’s the endorsement deal coming along?”
Talking about work snapped them both back into focus. Brenda said, “I’ve got a meeting scheduled with their agent today.”
“Perfect. Don’t worry about the endorsement fee. We need to spend some money if we want to get our name out there.”
“Got it,” Brenda replied. “I’ll get back to work. If you get tired, take a nap in the break room, okay?”
“Yeah.”
Madeline glanced at the clock and yawned, finishing off her coffee before diving into her tasks for the day.
Over at the hospital, Helene was telling Lucy a story about last night, adding plenty of drama and exaggeration.
Lucy’s face twisted with annoyance. “Madeline still refuses to divorce Julian?”
Helene nodded, eager for sympathy. “Yes, Mrs. Grayson. She’s so arrogant. She thinks she can use her looks to keep Julian wrapped around her finger.”
Helene smiled sweetly. “I understand, Mrs. Grayson. But what about splitting the assets?”
The idea of giving Madeline even a penny from Julian’s money made her uncomfortable.
“She shouldn’t get anything. What right does she have to Julian’s money? She’s been taking up space as Mrs. Grayson for long enough. We should be charging her, not the other way around. The thought of giving her money is ridiculous.”
Helene could hardly contain her joy.
This was exactly what she wanted. Madeline wouldn’t get a cent.
“Okay, I’ll talk to the lawyer right away. Should I check with Julian first?”
“There’s no need. He’s busy. We’ll handle everything for him. Once Madeline signs, we’ll give it to Julian, then they can go make it official. Simple. Don’t make it complicated.”
