Julian stood by Lucy’s hospital bed, his gaze turning darker with each passing second. He told the nurse to keep an eye on her, then stepped out into the hallway.
Miles had just finished a phone call. For once, his usually serious face was lit up with excitement as he hurried over to Julian. “Boss, we found Noah.”
“Noah’s been found?” Julian asked, eyebrows pulled together in confusion.
“Yes, boss.”
“Where was he?”
“One of the maids ran into him wandering around outside. She brought him right back.”
Miles repeated the news just as he’d heard it.
Julian’s eyes narrowed. Wandering outside? That meant Madeline hadn’t sent him away. But she hadn’t looked after him either. How could she let a five-year-old roam around by himself? The thought made Julian’s mood sink even further.
Madeline had just settled into the car when her phone rang. She glanced at the screen, her eyes narrowing even more. Julian again. What did he want this time?
She picked up, still annoyed. “What now, Your Majesty? Run out of things to boss around?”
Julian could feel his temple throbbing. That sharp tongue of hers never failed to get a rise out of him.
“Is this how you look after your child? By letting him go off on his own? He’s five, Madeline. Five. Is this really all the responsibility you have as a mother?”
Madeline could tell he was barely holding back his anger. “What are you talking about?”
“What am I talking about? Noah was out there all alone, and you had no idea. Remind me again why you worked so hard to take him away from me?”
Madeline was caught off guard. Before she could say a word, Julian hung up.
What was he talking about? Noah? Wasn’t Noah supposed to be out of the country? The way Julian spoke, it was like he’d seen him in person today.
Madeline stared at the message, her heart racing.
So Julian hadn’t seen Noah at all. Oliver had made sure Julian saw him and took him for Noah.
Madeline’s eyes flashed with frustration and worry. She honestly didn’t know what to feel. Her son was amazing, but he always made big decisions by himself. He never discussed anything with her. He’d just act first and tell her later, leaving her completely blindsided.
She could only sit there, torn between anger and anxiety, her head in her hands. What could she do now? All she could hope for was that her little troublemaker didn’t get caught by Julian.
Madeline rubbed her forehead and let out a heavy sigh. She looked at the driver and gave him a new address. “Take me to the Grayson family house.”
Julian had barely walked through the door at home when he saw Madeline step out of her car.
He watched her walk over, a cold smile on his lips. “That was quick.”
