Helene could tell Julian was really angry this time. Her legs felt like jelly, and she didn't even care about the pain in her leg as she dropped to her knees. “I… I… Julian, I know I messed up. Noah doesn’t like me, and sometimes he just wants to challenge me. I got flustered and accidentally hurt him.”
“But I swear, I never meant it. You know I almost became a mom. Every time I look at Noah, I think about my own child that I lost. Sometimes when he acts out, I just want to teach him a lesson, but I could never actually hurt him.”
“Those punishments you mentioned, they were all Mrs. Grayson’s idea. She’s stricter than I am. Noah can be difficult, but we only ever wanted what’s best for him.”
Helene started to sob. She made sure to bring up her lost baby, hoping Julian would remember everything she’d been through—how she only lost her child because of Noah’s cold-hearted mother. She even threw Lucy under the bus, blaming her for some of what happened. It wasn’t all lies. The forced kneeling and copying lines, that was Lucy. Helene would never have dared to go that far.
Julian’s face stayed cold and unreadable. Helene pressed a hand to her chest, tears streaming down her cheeks.
“Julian, I’ll admit it. I don’t love Noah the way a mother should. His mother took my baby from me. How am I supposed to feel nothing for the child of the woman who ruined my life?”
“I’m only human. I hurt too. Try to see it from my side. If my baby had lived, he’d be Noah’s age right now.”
She was sobbing so hard she could barely catch her breath. “I know it’s been five years. I shouldn’t keep bringing it up, but it still hurts so much. Every time I remember, it feels like I can’t even breathe.”
“I know you’ll never leave Noah. And I’m trying, Julian. I really am. I want to get along with him for your sake.”
“Julian, I made some mistakes before. I promise it won’t happen again. Please, trust me.”
With her back turned to Julian, Helene let a small, victorious smile cross her face. That child, her lost baby, was Julian’s greatest guilt. She was sure every word she said had hit him right in the heart. There was no way he wasn’t moved.
She turned back, face pale, eyes full of tears, looking right at Julian.
Oliver sat on the sofa with his legs swinging, staring at his dad. That was it? Just like that, the mean woman gets away with everything? If that was how it was going to be, he was done with his dad. Arms crossed, Oliver glared at Julian.
“I’m not finished with you. Where do you think you’re going?”
Julian’s cold voice echoed through the room. Helene froze, eyes wide in shock, unable to react.
