Julian stopped a couple of meters away, frowning. “So what exactly do you want?”
“I want Mommy to do it. Daddy, take me to Mommy. I don’t like doctors. I just like Mommy.”
Julian couldn’t help thinking this little guy was way too attached to Madeline, considering they’d only spent a single day together.
“No,” Julian said, shutting him down right away.
Well, that ended the discussion. If they unwrapped the bandage on his head and saw the wound had completely disappeared, that would scare anyone out of their mind.
When the boy refused to budge, Julian decided not to play along. “You can come down when you’ve changed your mind,” he said, turning to leave.
The living room fell completely silent. One adult sat on the sofa, one child perched on the windowsill. Neither looked at the other.
Brady glanced at Josh, eyes flicking between the two. “Hey,” he whispered, nudging Josh, “don’t you think that kid’s personality is a lot like Julian’s?”
Josh grinned. “Noticed that a while ago.”
Father and son continued their silent standoff.
An hour later, Julian got up, face still stormy. He grabbed his coat and car keys, then paused for three seconds. He didn’t even have to say a word. The little guy hopped down and followed right behind him.
Julian looked down at his son, sighed, and said, “You really are a smart one, aren’t you?”
Oliver grinned up at him, all sunshine.
Josh got up from the sofa. “Julian, you’re heading out already?”
Some things never changed. This guy would always put his wife and kid first.
Meanwhile, Madeline and Brenda had finished making a whole feast. Honestly, Madeline did almost all the cooking. Brenda mostly just managed to get in the way.
But Brenda loved doing things up for special occasions. She’d picked up fresh flowers and set the table to look perfect. The only thing missing was turning down the lights and lighting some candles.
Brenda clapped her hands, snapping a photo to post online. “Look at this, we’re eating good tonight.”
Madeline came out carrying two wine glasses. “Let’s dig in.”
Before they could start, Madeline’s phone chimed with a new message. She glanced at the screen.
Oliver: Mommy, Daddy and I are on our way home.
Madeline froze, looking up in surprise.
Brenda stared at her. “What’s up?”
“Julian’s bringing Oliver here.”
Another message popped up.
Oliver: We’re downstairs.
“They’re downstairs already.”
Brenda’s eyes went wide. “Seriously? Well, I… I should get going.” She looked panicked, grabbing her coat and bag in a flash.
Madeline caught her arm. “Why are you running off?”
“All I can think of is how Julian looked when he wanted to throw me into the sea. I said so many bad things to him that day. What if he holds a grudge? I am not sticking around to find out.”
Brenda darted out, but a moment later, her head popped back in. “Good luck, girl.”
And then she was gone.
Madeline looked at Julian and said, “Goodbye, Mr. Grayson.”
Julian’s expression darkened as he blocked the door with his hand. “I can’t come in?”
“Why would you… want to come in?” She tried to sound casual. He wasn’t the one who needed her help.
Julian clenched his jaw. “Have you had dinner yet?”
Madeline shook her head. “I was just about to.”
“I haven’t eaten either.”
“Oh. Well, you should go get something to eat. I’ll take care of him, don’t worry.”
Julian’s expression grew even darker. Was Madeline really so dense, or was she just pretending?
When Julian didn’t move, Madeline finally realized what he meant. “Wait… you want to eat here?”
Julian’s face was unreadable as he said, “Thank you.”
Madeline watched him stroll right in like he owned the place. She turned to Oliver, tilting her head. Did she ever invite him in? No. But he acted so sure of himself, she couldn’t exactly tell him to leave.
Now she was just glad she’d tidied up earlier, or everything would have been exposed.
Julian walked in and immediately noticed the table. Two sets of plates and cutlery, a bottle of wine, and fresh flowers. The whole place looked like it was set up for a date.
His mood instantly soured. No wonder she wanted him gone so fast.
She must be expecting her boyfriend.
Julian could feel irritation bubbling up. “Got plans?” His voice was colder than ice.
