Madeline glanced at herself in the mirror, tugging at her clothes to check for any signs of trouble. She’d gone to bed in long sleeves and pants on purpose, just to be safe. Everything was still in place. Thank God. She let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding.
Miles showed up early, arms loaded with fresh clothes for Julian and Oliver. When Madeline stepped out of her room, she spotted Julian already dressed in a crisp suit, looking completely at home as he sipped his coffee at the dining table. He really acted like he owned the place.
Madeline walked over, arms crossed. “Why are you still here?”
Julian didn’t even look up. “My son’s here.”
“He’s my so—” Madeline stopped herself, taking a deep breath. Not worth it. No fighting this early. “Fine. You’re busy with work, right? I’ll take him to school.”
Julian’s voice was cool, like he didn’t care at all. “Don’t I have a car? Why would I need you to drive him?”
Madeline clenched her jaw and reminded herself to stay calm. No drama. Not today.
Miles glanced nervously between them, then quickly handed Oliver’s clothes to Madeline. “Ms. Monroe, here’s Noah’s change of clothes.”
She took them, nodding her thanks.
Miles hesitated, then blurted, “If you want to take him to school, maybe you could go with Mr. Grayson.”
Madeline shot him a look. “I didn’t say I want to go with him.”
She spun around and headed back to her room.
Julian watched her leave, frowning, then gave Miles a sharp look. “You talk too much.”
Miles could only give a weak smile. He was just trying to help. Julian obviously wanted Madeline to come along, but he would never say it out loud. Being an assistant was the worst. Say something, you’re in trouble. Keep quiet, still in trouble.
When Madeline came back after helping Oliver get dressed, Marian had already set breakfast on the table. Madeline put a dumpling on Oliver’s plate. “Eat up, or you’ll be late.”
Oliver clutched his bowl and looked between his parents, picking up on the tension. “Are you fighting again?”
Madeline shot Julian a quick look, then ruffled Oliver’s hair. “Nope. We’re fine. Hurry and eat, okay?”
Oliver stuffed a dumpling in his mouth. “Can you take me to school?”
Julian answered, “Yeah.”
“Who was it?”
“Your best friend.”
Madeline didn’t need to ask. She knew Brenda had probably run off in shock.
After they dropped Oliver off at school, Julian glanced over at Madeline in the front seat. “Where to?”
Madeline could tell he was planning to drive her somewhere. She shook her head. “I’ll call a cab.”
She reached for the door handle, but Julian just started the car and drove off, calm as ever.
Madeline sat back, biting back a comment. After a minute, she realized he was heading straight toward her office.
She frowned, turning to look at him. “How do you even know where I work?”
