Madeline was just about to leave the private room, her business meeting a total bust, when the door swung open and someone barreled right into her. She hadn’t seen it coming and stumbled back, only to be caught by a pair of steady hands.
That familiar scent hit her immediately. Clean, crisp, achingly familiar. Madeline froze. She glanced up, and her gaze locked with a pair of dark eyes.
“Julian?” Her brows drew together in surprise as she stared at the man who had just walked in. “What are you doing here?”
Julian looked down at her, his face unreadable. For a second, something in his eyes flickered, and then he exhaled, just a tiny breath, like he’d been holding it in.
First Helene, now Julian. Was this room suddenly the hottest spot in town?
She stepped back and crossed her arms. “Here to see Helene?” It was the only thing that made sense. Helene had just left, and now Julian showed up.
Julian dropped his hands, his expression cool. Truth was, he didn’t even have an excuse for being here. He wasn’t about to admit he’d come to check on her, just to make sure she was okay.
He just grunted, going along with her version of things.
Madeline’s eyes flashed with knowing, and she just gave a little shrug. “Oh.”
At that moment, Josh came skidding to a stop in the doorway. “Wow, I really missed the moment. No hero swooping in to save the day. What a tragedy.”
Madeline raised an eyebrow and laughed. “So that’s why you rushed over, Mr. Grayson? Planning to play the knight in shining armor? Bit late for that. The damsel’s already gone, and if you care that much, you might still catch her if you run.”
Julian didn’t say anything, but his frown deepened.
Madeline, already in a bad mood, didn’t bother sticking around. She started for the door. Josh, realizing his joke had just made things worse, scrambled to block her path.
“Hold on, you’ve got Julian all wrong.”
“Wrong about what?” Madeline didn’t even slow down.
For once, Josh looked dead serious. He almost surprised himself with how much it sounded like actual life advice.
Julian just lit a cigarette, a lazy smile curling at his lips. “You think you know me that well?”
Josh frowned. Julian treated Noah as his own son. If that wasn’t regret, he didn’t know what was. Julian just hadn’t figured it out yet.
Still, Josh kept quiet. It wasn’t his job to meddle in someone else’s love life. They’d have to sort it out themselves.
Still, he kind of wanted to see Julian eat his words. The mighty Julian Grayson, chasing after love like the rest of them. The thought made Josh grin, just a little.
Things were about to get interesting.
“Julian, you going back in?”
