Julian narrowed his eyes, hiding the brief shadow that flickered there. He could see right through their little scheme tonight. He wasn’t clueless.
“You’re the one who invited them here tonight.” His tone was ice cold as he looked at Helene.
It wasn’t a question.
Helene hadn’t expected him to call her out like that. She froze, stammering, “I… no, Julian…”
She wanted to explain, but his heavy, unyielding gaze made her so nervous that her words tumbled out in a mess.
“You wanted to see what I’d do if Madeline had a child with someone else.” Julian’s words cut right to the point.
Helene felt a chill wrap around her. He’d seen straight through her.
Julian let out a short, mocking laugh.
How would he react?
He didn’t even know. He really didn’t. All he knew was that the thought twisted something deep inside him, filling him with a bitterness he couldn’t shake.
These rumors hadn’t come out of nowhere. The Monroes wouldn’t just make something up for no reason. Madeline must have been prepared for this, which was why she hadn’t been exposed.
He knew she was hiding something. From the moment she came back, from the way she’d chased him down at the airport and accused him of stealing her child at the Grayson house, he’d known she wasn’t telling him everything.
He just couldn’t figure out whether the child she was hiding was the one she’d faked her death to take away all those years ago, or if it was a child she’d had with someone else in the past five years.
But either way, that child wasn’t his.
The thought set off a surge of anger inside him, hot and sharp. It was so strong that for a moment, he could picture himself storming into Madeline’s house, pinning her beneath him, and demanding that she give him a child of their own.
Helene watched him, her eyes searching his downcast face for any sign of emotion. Gathering her courage, she asked quietly, “Julian, if Ms. Monroe really does have a child… what would you do?”
She needed to know. She needed an answer.
Julian looked up, a faint, careless smile touching his lips.
What would he do? He was already raising Noah, who wasn’t his biological son. What difference would one more make?
The thought startled him. Was he really getting so used to raising other people’s children? What was he, some kind of saint?
Helene’s eyes stayed fixed on him, hope flickering in her gaze.
Julian met her eyes, considering. After a long pause, he let out a sigh. “Helene, let’s call off our engagement.”
Helene’s whole body shook. She went still, staring at him as if she couldn’t believe what she’d just heard. It took her a few seconds to find her voice. “You… Julian, what did you just say?”
She closed the window and turned away.
Julian pushed Helene away. Seeing her red eyes and tear-streaked face only made him feel more irritable. He didn’t have the patience for her feelings right now.
“Think about it.”
Think about what? What she wanted for compensation?
Did this mean he really wanted to end things?
Before she could ask, Julian had already gotten in his car and driven off.
Helene stumbled after him, but no one could outrun a car. She lost her balance and fell to the ground, her nails digging into the pavement. She cried and cried, not knowing how much time passed. When she finally looked up, her eyes landed on the floor where Madeline lived. Hatred crashed over her in waves.
If it weren’t for Madeline, Julian would never treat her this way.
It was all Madeline’s fault.
Why did Madeline even have to exist?
Why wouldn’t Madeline just disappear already?
