Every department head sat through meetings on eggshells, terrified of slipping up, not even daring to breathe wrong. No one could figure out why the boss was in such a bad mood. Miles even tried asking Josh and Brady for help, but all they said was, “Some things are better left unsaid.”
…
In the car, the boys finally came clean to Madeline. They admitted they’d known each other for a while, had been in touch, and even pulled the old switcheroo. Madeline was floored. These little troublemakers had already tried swapping places. No wonder Oliver seemed so comfortable at the Grayson house that first time. He’d been there before, pretending to be Noah. He’d pulled this off right under Julian’s nose.
Madeline couldn’t help but be impressed by her boys. Honestly, she hadn’t noticed a thing, which was kind of embarrassing. Now that she thought about it, there were so many differences between them. Oliver was a total snack fiend, eating like a little piglet and cleaning his plate every time. Noah ate so politely, always stopping when he was full, no matter how good the food was. Oliver was a tornado at bedtime and impossible to wake up in the morning, always wanting a few more minutes. Noah kept to a strict schedule, going to bed and waking up on time, never giving her any trouble.
Back then, she’d just thought Oliver was finally growing up. Turns out, she’d just had a different kid.
Madeline let out a sigh, her lips twitching. “You two…”
“Mommy, if you’re going to get mad, get mad at me. It was my idea,” Oliver blurted, stepping forward right away.
Noah jumped in too. “Don’t blame Oliver, Mommy. He only did it to help me. If you want to yell at someone, yell at me.”
“No, no, I talked him into it. It’s my fault, really.”
“I did it because I wanted to. Don’t blame Oliver…”
“Alright, that’s enough,” Madeline interrupted, unable to stop herself from laughing as they argued over who should take the blame. “Did I ever say I was mad at you?”
The boys were just about to hop out when Madeline’s expression suddenly changed. “Wait.”
“What is it, Mommy?”
She narrowed her eyes, peering through the rear window. Not far away, someone stood next to a black car, pointing a camera straight at them. Madeline frowned. Helene and Raine must still be desperate after failing to find the kids at her place last time. She’d seen people lurking around for days now, but she always managed to avoid them. Now, they were getting bold, practically out in the open.
Madeline’s lips curled into a cold little smile. “You two stay here. Mommy has something to take care of.”
She opened the door and stepped out of the car.
