Raine hunched her shoulders, looking miserable. Helene’s mood was absolutely toxic lately. It felt like she could explode at any second, and every time Raine spoke to her, she had to tiptoe around, terrified that the smallest thing would set her off.
“Maybe she’s just being extra careful... You know how sneaky she is. Can you give me a little more time?” Raine tried.
“Time?” Helene’s brows knitted together. “Julian is about to break off our engagement because of that bitch Madeline. You want time? Who’s giving me time?”
Raine froze. Julian wanted to call off the engagement? No wonder Helene had been fuming these past few days. Now it all made sense.
Raine edged forward. “It has to be Madeline. I bet she seduced Mr. Grayson.”
“You think I need you to tell me that?” Helene’s glare was icy and sharp, her anger practically vibrating in the air. What on earth had Madeline done to Julian? There was no way she’d let him walk away. She was supposed to be Mrs. Grayson. She couldn’t let Madeline steal it again.
“Helene, Mr. Grayson only wants out because of Madeline. If Madeline was gone, he’d have no reason to break things off,” Raine said, her eyes flashing with something cold.
That was exactly what Helene wanted to hear. She turned, grabbing Raine’s hand. “You’re right. You have to help me.”
Helene’s sudden shift threw Raine off. She had a bad feeling about where this was headed. “What do you want me to do, Helene?”
Helene tugged her down onto the couch, a sly, bitter smile on her face. “Help me get rid of Madeline. Once she’s out of the picture, it’ll be a piece of cake for your family to take over her company. Her being gone is good for both of us.”
Of course Raine understood, but was Helene really asking her to do the dirty work?
“Raine, if you want Madeline’s company and to become the only heiress of the Monroe family, it’s up to you.”
Just as she thought. Helene wanted her to get her hands dirty, so if things went south, Raine would take the blame. Did Helene think she was stupid?
Raine’s face twisted with uncertainty. “Helene, you know I can’t handle Madeline on my own...”
Helene rolled her eyes. “Obviously. I know what you’re capable of. That’s why we need to work together. Tomorrow night, do whatever it takes to bring Madeline back to the Monroe house.”
Helene stood, folding her arms as her eyes shimmered with something dark. “I don’t want her gone right away. Watching her suffer, watching her reputation get trashed, seeing Julian turn on her... That’s what I really want.”
“All you need to do is what I say.”
Raine let out a shaky breath. If all she had to do was lure Madeline back to the house, that was easy enough. “Okay, Helene. I’ll do what you want.”
Helene let out a short, cold laugh and walked over to the window. She stared out at the city lights, her eyes burning with hatred. She was ready. She couldn’t wait to start.
...
“No, Grandma, that’s not it.”
Her grandmother’s eyes were full of affection. “I know, you’re just busy with work. If Raine hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t have realized how amazing you are, running a whole company on your own.”
Madeline smiled a little and glanced at Raine.
Raine lifted her brows and flashed a smile. “I know we haven’t been getting along lately. I wanted to apologize. Grandma and I came here to invite you home for dinner.”
Madeline’s eyes cooled. “You don’t have to pretend with me.”
Raine blinked, looking all innocent. “I really mean it. I want to say sorry.”
Grandma chimed in. “Madeline, don’t be upset. Raine told me everything and I’ve already scolded her. She said sorry. It’s been so long since you spent time with Grandma. Have dinner with me tonight, okay?”
“She’s right, sis,” Raine added, smiling softly. “Grandma misses you so much. Her legs aren’t what they used to be, but she still came all this way to get you. You can’t turn us down.”
“Madeline,” Grandma said, her eyes shining with hope.
With her grandmother coming in person, Madeline couldn’t say no. Still, she knew Raine wouldn’t act this nice without a reason. There had to be something else going on.
