It felt like her blood froze in her veins. Something exploded in her head and suddenly everything went black. Pain shot from her chest all the way through her body, every breath sharp and unbearable. Madeline lunged forward, eyes wide, too scared to blink. Her hands shook uncontrollably as she reached for the small, motionless body on the floor. She forced her mouth open, dragging in a shaky breath, and pressed her fingers to the child’s neck. One second. Two seconds. Madeline begged herself to stay calm. She finally caught the faint, fluttering pulse and moved quickly to check for injuries. Her eyes darted around the room. She grabbed a cloth and pressed it hard against the bleeding.
“Noah… don’t be scared. It’s okay. Mommy’s here…” Her voice broke as she spoke.
Suddenly, a pair of strong hands took the child from her. Without hesitating, Julian stormed out of the room, Noah held tight in his arms.
Lucy watched as Julian came out, his face dark and cold, carrying a child soaked in blood. The angry words she’d been about to shout froze in her throat.
“What…” Her voice faded. How could this have happened?
“How is this possible?” Lucy’s mind raced, refusing to believe the boy had actually been inside. Only two keys existed for that room. She had one. The maid, Gabby, had the other.
Julian didn’t stop. He charged through the halls, clutching Noah. Miles had already called the family doctor, who waited by the door.
“We need the hospital,” Madeline said, her voice urgent.
There was no time to waste. The injury was on Noah’s head, and head wounds bled the most. The family doctor could handle scraped knees or fevers, but this was life or death. Waiting even a few minutes could cost Noah everything.
“Get the car,” Julian ordered.
Miles was already gone. “On it!”
As everyone scrambled, Lucy stood frozen, finally realizing the gravity of what had happened. She covered her mouth, her eyes wide. “Oh my god!”
How did things get to this point? She never expected the kid would actually be in that room. How did he even get in?
“Mrs. Grayson.” Helene reached for Lucy’s hand, her concern looking almost sincere.
Lucy glanced at her, voice shaking. “Helene, what happened? How could this happen?”
This happened at the Grayson estate. She couldn’t just pretend nothing was wrong.
Helene’s lips curled ever so slightly. “Of course.”
It was exactly what she wanted.
At the hospital, Julian never let up on the gas. He drove like a man possessed, getting Noah there in fifteen minutes flat. As soon as they arrived, the doctors rushed out with a gurney, whisking Noah away toward the emergency room.
“You need to wait outside,” a nurse said, stopping them at the doors.
Madeline struggled to stay strong, her voice trembling. “Please, save him…”
“We’ll do everything we can.”
