Helene looked over at Julian. “Julian, where are you two headed? Need any help?”
Julian’s dark eyes locked onto her, his face unreadable. He watched her for a moment, then replied with a cold, flat, “No.”
Helene nodded, lips pressed together. “Alright. I’ll head home then. Mrs. Grayson was really shaken up today… I’ll visit her tomorrow to keep her company.”
“Okay.” Julian’s answer was short. He clearly didn’t want to talk anymore. Without looking back, he walked away.
Madeline’s gaze swept over Helene, cold and sharp.
Helene frowned a little, but there was a sly curve to her lips. “Take care, Ms. Monroe.”
Madeline’s hands curled into fists, her voice trembling. “You think I can’t do anything to you, just because I don’t have proof?”
She knew Helene was behind all this. Even if she never found the evidence, she would never forgive her. Whatever her child had suffered, she would make Helene pay it back a thousand times over.
Helene kept up her innocent act. “Ms. Monroe, I really have no idea what you’re talking about. I was willing to let things go, since your child’s been through enough, but if you keep making those false accusations about me, I think you need to know I’m not as easy to push around as you think.”
Madeline didn’t bother replying. She just gave Helene one last, ice-cold look, then turned and walked away.
On the outside, Helene was all composure, but inside, she was rattled. Madeline’s look had been terrifying, almost unhinged. For a second, Helene honestly thought Madeline might just stab her, right there.
She clutched her purse, watching Madeline’s figure disappear down the hall, and took a deep breath to steady herself.
She’d messed up. She’d thought the kid would die for sure. She never expected he might actually pull through. She also thought Madeline would blame Julian, that everything would fall apart between them. She never imagined Madeline would see right through her.
The captured assassins wanted to die, but Julian had ordered that they be kept alive. Now, even that choice was gone.
The room was cold and metallic, lined with several heavy iron cages. Inside, the men were locked up tight.
The second she walked in, Madeline felt a chill go right through her. She fixed her eyes on the men in the cages. These were the ones who had taken Noah. They’d worn masks, but she’d recognize their builds anywhere.
Just thinking about what they’d done to Noah sent a wave of hatred crashing through her, so strong it almost drowned out everything else. But as much as she hated them, she hated the person who’d sent them even more.
None of them would talk. The Graysons didn’t play nice. The floor was slick with blood, and the men still kept their mouths shut.
Julian swept his gaze over them, his voice like ice. “Who sent you?”
