Whether she lived or died was out of her hands now. It was all up to fate.
“Madeline… no, don’t leave me here! Come back, Madeline, please come back! I don’t want to die! Madeline, you bitch, you absolute bitch! Even if I die, I’ll never forgive you!”
“You hear me? Come back! Let me go! I’ll marry Julian soon! If I die here, the Fortners and the Graysons will make you pay for it!”
“Madeline! Do you hear me?”
Helene fought desperately against her restraints. The harder she struggled, the faster the blood poured from her wounds. Pain lanced through her, sharp and endless, until she didn’t even have the strength to curse anymore. Her voice broke apart, turning into pitiful pleading.
“Help me… someone, please! Madeline, I’m sorry! Please let me go, I’m begging you! I don’t want to die, please…”
She was truly terrified now. If no one found her, this would be the end. She didn’t want to die. She’d never believed Madeline would actually go this far. How could she?
Downstairs, Madeline moved quietly, her steps steady. Casey was leaning against a car, smoking, looking like he didn’t have a care in the world. His cold eyes flicked over to her.
He lifted an eyebrow, straightening up. “All done?”
Madeline just nodded. “Yeah.”
“Julian’s here. Brought backup.” There was a twisted excitement in Casey’s eyes, a cruel little smile on his lips.
Madeline dropped her gaze and let out a soft, mocking laugh. Of course Julian would come running for the girl he loved.
Casey’s smile widened. “Go make sure there’s nothing left behind.”
One of the men behind him nodded and headed upstairs. He knew exactly what Casey meant—wipe away every single trace Madeline had been here. No evidence. No loose ends.
“Get in. I’ll drive you home.”
Casey stubbed out his cigarette, opened the car door, and waited for Madeline to slide in. She didn’t say a word. She just got in.
The car pulled away, and after a while, they passed another vehicle coming from the opposite direction.
About ten minutes later, Miles came running back. “Boss, we found her.”
Julian was out of the car in a heartbeat, following Miles through the building. As they got closer to the room, he heard a weak, broken cry from inside.
“It hurts… it hurts so much…”
“Ms. Fortner, please stay still,” a bodyguard said gently.
Julian walked in and froze. Helene was a mess. She’s covered in blood, a dagger still pinning her thigh to the chair. One of the bodyguards was trying to pull the knife out, but every time he touched it, Helene screamed, her pain filling the room.
Julian’s brow furrowed hard, his whole body radiating cold fury.
Helene forced her eyes open, saw Julian, and burst into tears. Her hand lifted shakily, reaching for him, her face twisted in pain and helplessness.
“Julian… don’t let Madeline get away with this. Please, help me…”
