Helene sucked in a sharp breath, pain flashing across her face. Courtney hurried over to steady her. “Oh, sweetheart, slow down. Does it hurt?”
“Yeah…” Helene’s voice trembled, on the edge of tears. Every throb of pain just made her hate Madeline even more. She wish she could make that bitch disappear forever.
Courtney gently patted Helene’s back, trying to comfort her. “Just hang in there a little longer. Your dad and I will make sure she pays for what she’s done. We’ll bring her here so you can see her get what she deserves.”
Helene bit back her anger and nodded, eyes cold and determined. “Mom, you can’t let her off the hook.”
“I know, sweetheart. I know.”
“And Julian wants to do a DNA test with that kid. You and Dad have to keep an eye on everything. We can’t let anything go wrong,” Helene insisted, clutching Courtney’s hand, her tone urgent.
“Of course, we’re being careful. Your dad and I are on it. You just focus on getting better,” Courtney promised.
They both knew how important this was. There was no room for mistakes. Julian didn’t even realize the child was his, but he was already so protective. If he found out the truth, everything would fall apart.
Helene groaned in frustration, raking her fingers through her hair. “This is a nightmare. I can’t relax while those kids are still around. Even if Noah’s gone, there’s still the other one. Either of them could ruin everything for us.”
Courtney pulled up a chair and sat by Helene’s bed, her eyes dark and calculating. “That child really is a ticking time bomb.”
“Mom, we need to get rid of the other one too.” Helene’s eyes were hard, filled with desperation. She was tired of living in fear. She wanted to end this, once and for all.
“No.” This time, Courtney cut her off without hesitation. “Noah just had an accident. They’ll be watching the other one even more closely now. If we try anything, it’ll backfire. We could get caught. We need to wait. Now is not the time.”
Helene’s face darkened. That was what hurt the most. She couldn’t beat Madeline. She couldn’t even compete with Madeline’s child.
She closed her mouth, refusing to say another word.
…
Madeline lay in her hospital bed, eyes squeezed shut, sweat beading on her smooth forehead. Her face twisted in pain, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes. She looked trapped in a nightmare she couldn’t escape.
In her dream, Madeline stumbled forward, her steps unsteady, and saw the small figure of a little boy up ahead. It was Noah.
She ran toward him, desperate to reach him, but Noah kept moving further away. No matter how hard Madeline tried, no matter how far she stretched out her hand, she just couldn’t catch his tiny fingers.
