"You think I need you to buy me ointment?"

Julian’s irritation only grew. Typical. She didn’t have an ounce of sympathy for him.

Madeline just gave a tired little shrug. “What do you want me to do?”

Before Julian could respond, Madeline’s phone rang. She glanced at the screen and picked up. It was Oliver, who was still at the hospital with Noah. “Hey, Oliver.”

“Mommy, are you coming back soon?”

“I’ll be there soon. Is something wrong?”

“Two men came to see Noah.”

“Two men?” Madeline hesitated, a note of confusion in her voice. “Okay. Mommy’s coming right back.”

She hung up and looked at Julian. “If you don’t want to get ointment, let’s just go back to the hospital. Someone’s visiting Noah. There should be an adult there.”

Julian didn’t say anything. He just turned the car at the next intersection and headed for the hospital.

When they got back to Noah’s room, Madeline pushed open the door and saw Josh and Brady inside.

“Daddy! Mommy!” Oliver called out.

“Hi, Julian, Madeline.” Josh and Brady greeted them.

Julian swept his eyes over everyone in the room and nodded.

Josh’s jaw practically dropped. “Whoa. Julian, what happened to your face? Who punched you?”

He and Brady rushed over, eyes wide with shock. Julian getting beat up was practically unheard of.

Julian shot them a glare and, just like that, the laughter died on their lips.

Madeline sat beside him and smiled. “Weird how?”

He frowned, searching for words. “They… handle surprises really well.”

That was the best way he could put it. When those two strange men showed up, they’d stared at him and his brother like they’d seen something from outer space. But after a few seconds of shock, they just accepted the fact that the boys looked exactly alike and were brothers. No big deal.

On the other side of the room, Josh and Brady had Julian cornered. Josh nudged him. “Julian, can you please explain how you went from one kid to two?”

Brady leaned in, keeping his voice low. “Seriously. So the other baby didn’t die back then. When I saw them both just now, I nearly had a heart attack. I thought I was seeing things.”

Josh pressed on. “So what are you going to do now, Julian? You have two sons. What if their real dad comes looking for them? What if your wife decides to leave with him?”

Julian’s frown deepened. Something in his eyes shifted, dark and intense.

Josh immediately felt the chill in the air and held up his hands. “Don’t look at me like that. I’m just saying. If the real dad shows up, of course he’ll want his sons back. And Madeline has two kids with that guy. What if she decides to give them a real family and goes back to him?”
