Madeline didn’t bother with Helene calling after her.
She walked out of the cafe and saw the sky turning dark. A sleek black car rolled up and stopped right in front of her.
She glanced over. The window slid down and Casey looked at her, eyebrow raised. “Get in.”
Madeline didn’t hesitate. She went around and got in from the other side.
“Are you all set?” Casey asked as soon as she closed the door.
She paused, just for a second. “Yeah. When the time comes, can you take Oliver and Noah and just go? I’m worried something might hold me up.”
“You’re afraid Julian will try to stop you?”
Madeline nodded. She really was afraid. Not just of Julian trying to keep her there, but also of the kids being taken away. She wasn’t scared for herself, not really, but the idea of something happening to the boys in all the chaos made her stomach twist.
“Yeah.”
Casey kept his hand on the wheel, looking relaxed. “From what I’ve seen, Julian won’t even show up at the engagement party. Actually, I doubt he’ll let it happen at all.”
Madeline shook her head. “No, he’ll be there. Christian won’t let him off the hook. He’ll do whatever it takes to get Julian to show up, just to keep up appearances.”
The drive back to her apartment was short. Casey pulled up out front, and Madeline got out.
A little way down the street, a fancy Rolls-Royce was parked, its presence impossible to miss.
The driver’s window rolled down. Inside, a man leaned back, cigarette between his fingers. Smoke curled around his face, his features sharp and cold. Even in the dim light, his expression was like stone.
He stared at Madeline and Casey through the smoky air, eyes icy and unblinking.
“Take care on your way home,” Casey said, voice soft.
“I will.”
Madeline started to walk away, then stopped. She turned to look at him, her pretty face breaking into a small, grateful smile. “Casey, thank you.”
He gave her a look. “Didn’t I tell you? You don’t have to say thanks to me.”
She couldn’t help but smile.
“So what should I say instead? ‘Good job, this is what you’re supposed to do for me’?” she muttered, almost to herself. “That would make me sound pretty shameless.”
So good, Madeline sometimes wondered if she even deserved someone like him.
She still remembered the first time they met. It was pouring rain, the kind of night that made everything feel hopeless. She’d been desperate, sitting on the curb, when he showed up out of nowhere, holding an umbrella and crouching down beside her. She’d dug out the last ten bucks she had, begging him to take her to the hospital. He’d just laughed, muttering something like, “Wow, ten bucks, how could I say no?”
Madeline smiled at the memory and turned to go inside.
Right then, another car eased to a stop next to her. The window dropped, and Julian’s striking face appeared.
He looked colder than ever, his features sharp in the moonlight, like he’d been carved from ice.
Madeline stared, surprised.
Just half an hour ago, Helene had been trying to find him, and now here he was.
She hadn’t seen Julian since their last argument. Even when Noah was discharged from the hospital, it was Miles who showed up.
She pushed those thoughts away, not saying a word, not even glancing back. She turned and walked quickly toward her building.
Julian rubbed his brow, then opened the car door and strode after her, catching up in just a few long steps.
