He’d been a complete idiot. Back then, he really believed Madeline couldn’t stand Helene always hanging around him, and she let herself get swept up in those ugly thoughts and wanted Helene and her baby gone. He never stopped to remember that Madeline was eight months pregnant herself, almost ready to give birth. How could she possibly have the time or reason to hurt a child who had nothing to do with her?
He got so lost in what he thought was the truth, he forgot everything about Madeline’s two years by his side. She never argued, never tried to get ahead, never made enemies. She was always so gentle, so soft-spoken. Someone like that would never hurt anyone.
Julian let out a bitter, mocking laugh at himself. He’d never once chosen to believe his wife.
“I don’t even know why she wanted to hurt me,” Helene said, her voice rough and shaky. “But she did. You checked it out yourself. The truth was right there. She’s the one who hurt my child.”
“I’ll look into it again. The person who spread lies about Madeline won’t get away with it.”
“Lies?” Helene let out a strangled laugh that turned into a cough, blood trickling from her mouth. “Lies… No one ever lied about this.”
She reached out, her hand shaking as she tried to grab her phone. “There’s a video… you can watch it. If you think it’s fake, get it checked. I admit, I lied about other things, but not about this. Not this.”
Miles stepped over and took the phone from her bloody fingers. It was slippery with blood, and he was about to wipe it clean.
“Leave it,” Julian said quietly, his face completely blank.
He didn’t want to see anything else that would drag Madeline through the mud.
“Julian, just look. Please, just look. What if Madeline isn’t who you think she is? Please, I’m begging you, just watch it,” Helene pleaded, her voice breaking as she shouted after him.
Lucy’s eyes were red and puffy from days of crying. Looking at the boys, she felt both relief and crushing regret. She kept thinking she deserved whatever happened to her. She’d almost gotten her own grandson killed, and she’d treated Noah so horribly before. She’d always picked on him, siding with Helene to bully him. He was just a little kid, hadn’t done anything wrong, and just because she didn’t like him, she made him kneel and copy out the family rules.
No wonder Noah never called her grandma. She didn’t deserve it.
Tears kept streaming down her cheeks as she watched the kids. The two boys stared back at her with cold eyes, glancing now and then at a phone on the table.
Mommy, they all regret what they did now. When are you coming back?
“Lucy, where’s Helene? She knows she was wrong. Please, can’t you just give Helene back to me?” Courtney cried, rushing at Lucy the moment she walked in.
