Julian had been on edge for days, nearly losing his mind with worry. He needed to know if Madeline was safe, and the not knowing was eating him alive.
Casey ran his tongue over his lips. “She’s really not here. If you don’t believe me, go ahead and look around. If you find her, you can take her with you.”
Julian’s eyes narrowed, cold and sharp as a hawk’s. He watched Casey closely, trying to figure out if he was lying.
All Julian had were his suspicions. He couldn’t be sure Madeline was here, but he also didn’t trust Casey’s word. Casey was involved in this. He was the one who took the children and brought him back. He was the one who handled Andrew. There was no way Julian could just take him at face value.
Even if Casey offered to let him search, Julian wasn’t about to fall for it. Country Y was huge. If Casey really wanted to hide someone, it wouldn’t be hard.
Julian kept his eyes on Casey, deep in thought for a full minute. Then he turned and left without another word.
Whether Casey was lying or not didn’t matter as much as whether Madeline was safe. If she was with Casey, at least she was alive. If he wanted to lie about it, Julian didn’t care. But since he still didn’t have answers, he’d keep searching, no matter what it took.
He needed to see her, no matter what. Alive or dead. Until he saw Madeline’s body himself, no one could say she was gone.
Once he left Casey’s place and got in the car, Julian’s face grew even colder. “Keep eyes on Casey at all times.”
Back in the Capital, Julian’s bodyguard stepped forward to report. “Boss, we found those thugs. But they’re still insisting Ms. Monroe was the one who hired them.”
Julian’s brow furrowed. “Keep pressing them until they give us the truth.”
He went over everything again in his mind. He couldn’t ignore the possibility that Helene had staged the whole thing. The child she carried wasn’t his. If she gave birth, she’d always be afraid he’d find out the truth. She didn’t want to keep the baby, but she also didn’t want to lose this chance. If she could blame Madeline, get him angry enough to divorce her, it would solve everything at once. One move, two problems gone.
He hadn’t thought of it before, but now the idea made perfect sense. There was just one thing he couldn’t figure out. He and the police had both looked into it. With Helene’s skills, it didn’t seem possible for her to pull this off without leaving any evidence behind. That was the one part Julian just couldn’t understand.
