Madeline thought it over for a second, then nodded. She’d been in a coma for over two months, so things must have been pretty bad at first. It made sense that Casey sent the kids back to the Grayson family. What else could he have done?
“Here, take your medicine.” Jordan walked over, holding a bowl in his hands.
Madeline pushed herself up. Casey reached out to steady her, and she took the bowl from Jordan. The strong scent of herbs hit her right away. She leaned in a little, sniffing, and her eyes widened as she recognized the ingredients. “Is this an antidote?”
Jordan nodded. “Yeah, you were poisoned two months ago. This will help clear out whatever’s left in your system.”
“I was poisoned?” Madeline stared at him.
“It was pretty serious, too. Luckily…” Jordan broke off suddenly. Casey was giving him a look, and he quickly cleared his throat. “Luckily, I’m just that good. Otherwise, we might have lost you.”
He managed a self-satisfied smile, covering up whatever he’d almost let slip.
Casey turned his attention back to Madeline. His voice was calm but cool. “Is there anyone around you who’d have a reason to poison you?”
Madeline frowned, the first name popping into her mind. “Helene…”
But then she hesitated. If Helene really wanted her dead, why bother sending assassins after her? The poison would have done the job, no mess, no fuss. That didn’t make any sense. It probably wasn’t Helene. She wouldn’t have had the chance.
Who else could it be?
Madeline’s mind came up blank. She pressed her fingers to her temple, feeling a headache coming on.
Casey watched her for a few seconds, then said, “If you can’t remember, don’t force it. You just woke up. Take it easy. There’s no rush. We’ll figure it out once you’re stronger.”
“Okay.”
Madeline nodded and swallowed the medicine in one go. Casey reached over to take the empty bowl, and her eyes landed on his hand. She noticed it right away. Without thinking, she grabbed his wrist. “What happened to your hand?”
She’d noticed earlier the way his fingers, covered by black sleeves, seemed stiff. Now that she was closer, she realized it wasn’t just stiffness. There were no fingers under those covers.
Casey raised an eyebrow and smoothly pulled his hand away. “Got in a fight. Wasn’t careful. Got hurt.”
Madeline’s brow creased. “How could you get hurt that badly?”
So, should she go back?
She didn’t want to.
The Capital only brought her pain. She wanted to run as far from it as she could.
But if she didn’t go back, what about Noah and Oliver?
“You’re thinking about the kids, aren’t you?”
“Yeah. If I stay here, does that mean I’ll never see them again?”
Casey nodded. “If you stay, you’ll get a new identity. If you want to keep hiding, you can’t go see them. That’s just how it is.”
He paused. “Of course, you could always try to fight the Grayson family for custody. But if you do, you better be ready to spend the rest of your life on the run.”
