"So, will you say yes or not?" Madeline watched Julian, her nerves written all over her face. She really wanted him to agree. It just seemed like the best thing for everyone.
"I'll say yes, but then what? Don't forget about my grandfather."
"That's for you to figure out."
Julian nodded. "Alright. In that case, I'm not getting any treatment. Your bargaining chip doesn't work anymore." His voice was so steady, almost gentle, and when he looked at her, there was something intense and helpless in his eyes.
"Julian! You... Seriously?" Madeline let out a scoff, biting back her frustration. No treatment? Wow. Only he could come up with something like that.
Julian just smiled softly at her and reached out to pat her head. Whatever she thought of him, he had already decided—he was never letting her leave again.
Madeline slapped his hand away. "Stop it. You’re going to make me go bald." It was only her first day back and he was already driving her crazy. They really were a pair of trouble magnets.
Julian watched her, amusement sparking in his eyes. At least now she was showing some real emotion—laughing, getting mad, letting her temper show. It was a huge improvement from when she was always so distant. If she didn’t want to remarry him now, so what? He could wait. There was plenty of time ahead, and he was sure she’d come around eventually.
Madeline’s brow creased. "Who else would you have been all over when you were drunk? A ghost?"
Julian stared at her, his throat working as he let out a low, satisfied laugh. So it wasn’t a dream. He hadn’t kissed someone else. It had been her, all along.
Madeline saw the sudden grin on his face and blinked, confused. "What’s so funny—" Her words were cut off by his kiss. She froze, eyes wide, as he pulled her in close, one arm tight around her waist, the other cradling the back of her head. He kissed her hard, leaving her no chance to escape.
She knew she couldn’t shove him off, so when his tongue swept into her mouth, she bit down on it. The taste of blood spread instantly. Julian didn’t even seem to notice. He just held her, refusing to let go, like nothing else in the world mattered.
