Christian down the stairs, moving slowly. “It’s the middle of the night. Where are you going?”
Julian turned back, his voice steady and bland. “Couldn’t sleep. Thought I’d go for a walk.”
“Couldn’t sleep, so you’re going for a walk?” Christian echoed Julian with a heavy sigh. “Taking a walk, or are you off to see Madeline?”
Christian’s expression was ice cold. Both kids were with the Graysons. If Madeline was alive, she’d show up again sooner or later. The way Julian and the boys were acting made it obvious—she was back.
Worry crept into Christian’s eyes.
Julian pressed his lips together, then suddenly said in a light, almost careless tone, “I’m dying.”
“What?” Christian frowned hard.
“Sleep disorder. Brady says if I don’t get help, I’ll die.”
Julian spoke so calmly, like he was talking about the weather. That calm unsettled Christian more than anything else.
He stepped closer, studying Julian’s face. He did look worn out. Up close, his eyes were shadowed and sunken, exhaustion written all over him.
A single thought shot through Christian’s mind, one that made his heart lurch.
Terminal. It was that bad.
His heart hammered in his chest. “Someone get the doctor. Hurry.”
Julian just shook his head, voice slow and unhurried. “No point. If there was, I wouldn’t be like this.”
His voice was too calm, his eyes almost empty. Christian couldn’t tell if he was serious or making it all up.
He knew about Julian’s sleep problems, but he never thought it was this bad—that it could kill him. But with how pale Julian looked, Christian couldn’t help but believe it.
Off to the side, Oliver’s eyes shimmered and he started to quietly wipe away tears. Noah looked at his brother, caught on quick, and dropped his head in sadness.
Seeing the boys like that, Christian’s doubts disappeared.
Julian led the two boys out of the house and almost laughed at how ridiculous it all was.
Click.
Madeline opened the door in a heartbeat.
Julian, who had just heard her walk away, was caught off guard when she opened up the second the boys called out.
“Noah! Oliver!” Madeline’s eyes sparkled.
“Mommy, we came to stay with you.” Noah and Oliver dove straight into her arms.
Madeline’s heart soared at the surprise, so much so that she completely forgot about the man who’d brought them.
For the first time, Julian realized just how invisible he could be—standing there while Madeline smothered the boys with hugs and kisses, barely sparing him a glance.
He’d had to fib to get out, and now he needed his sons just to get in.
“Thanks for bringing them over. Drive safe on your way back.” Madeline took Noah and Oliver by the hand, giving Julian a bright, grateful smile.
