Helene got dressed in silence, her eyes locked on Madeline’s with a smug little smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. Madeline’s heart skipped a beat when she saw her, and her face instantly went cold.
“Ms. Monroe, you’re here. Julian’s in the shower. You’ll have to wait.” Helene tossed the words over her shoulder as she walked out, hoping to catch a flicker of hurt or jealousy on Madeline’s face. But there was nothing. Not even a hint. That left Helene feeling unsatisfied, and she didn’t exactly look thrilled as she left either.
Her plan had obviously flopped. Julian never drank that coffee, and she hadn’t even had a chance to use her backup. When she heard Madeline’s voice outside, she had no choice but to get up. Oh well. She wasn’t in a rush. She’d missed this chance, but there’d be plenty more.
The lingering scent in the room was coming from Helene. Madeline wrinkled her nose and covered it with her hand. As Helene left, the heavy perfume faded away.
Julian came out of the bathroom and spotted Madeline standing in the doorway. He didn’t like seeing her just standing there, looking so stiff. He walked over to her. “You’re here. Why are you just standing in the hall?”
Madeline took a long, steadying breath, glanced at Julian, and stepped inside with her medical kit, setting it down on the table.
Julian immediately sensed something was off. “What’s wrong? Did someone upset you?”
Madeline could feel a knot tightening in her chest. She tried to smile, but it just wouldn’t come. She wanted to ask him something, but couldn’t find the right words or the right place to even begin.
Julian studied her face, his eyes narrowing. She looked… miserable. He reached for her hand, but she pulled away. His expression grew more serious, almost worried. It seemed like the one who upset her might be him.
But what had he done?
He pulled her closer, settling her on his lap, looking down at her. “Did I do something? Are you mad at me?”
He left the room, but she was already gone. She must have been a spy in a past life, the way she could disappear so fast.
Julian slipped on some clothes, grabbed his car keys, and headed for the door, ready to chase after her. He only made it a couple of steps before Lucy called out to him.
“Sir, Mrs. Grayson wants you downstairs.”
Julian was still hoping to catch up with Madeline. “What does she want?”
The servant, the same one who’d shown Madeline up earlier, hesitated for a second, clearly unsure how to explain. “She just… has something she wants to ask you.”
