A low, knowing rumble moved through the office, everyone pretending to work while sneaking glances at the closed blinds.
Madeline watched as Julian pulled them shut. She was about to step in, but before she could, he caught her wrist and drew her in, pulling her right against his chest. She bumped into him, feeling just how solid he was, his heartbeat steady in her ears. His voice, deep and familiar, came from above her. “Just give me two minutes, let me explain.”
She shot him a look. “I already know what happened. You don’t have to explain anything.”
With a push, she wriggled free and made her way around to her chair, sitting down and arching an eyebrow at him. “If that’s what you came here for, you can go. I’m actually busy.”
Before she could breathe, she felt the cool brush of his cologne as he swept her up, claiming her seat and setting her on his lap instead.
She glanced wildly at the door, panic flaring. “Julian, this is my office!”
He looked at her, unfazed. “Are you mad?”
“Who’s mad?” she shot back.
“You are.”
“I’m not. Why would I be mad?” She tried to push him away, but his arms wrapped around her like iron. There was no budging him.
“Julian!” Her voice was sharper now, edged with frustration.
He just smiled, calm as ever. “Yeah, I’m here.”
“I need to work. Why are you messing around in my office? If you keep this up, I really will get angry.”
His breath was warm against her neck, making her shiver. “Alright, I’m sorry. What’ll it take to make you forgive me?”
“Leave.”
“If I go, you’ll forgive me?”
“Yes.”
Julian laughed softly behind her. “I shouldn’t have even asked.” He let her go and helped her back into her chair. “I’ll come back later. Get your work done.”
Madeline gave him a look that was all annoyance, not even bothering to hide it.
Julian didn’t seem to mind at all. He just grinned, that mischievous spark in his eyes, and walked out.
She’s such a workaholic, he thought.
Finally, he put out his cigarette and drove off. Half an hour later, his car pulled up again. This time, he grabbed his phone and dialed her office line.
Madeline picked up, her voice all business. “Hello, who’s this?”
“Delivery.”
She froze, caught off guard.
Before she could say a word, Julian went on, “Want me to bring it up to you?”
Madeline, standing in her office and ready to head out, rubbed her forehead. “Since when do you deliver food?”
“It’s a new thing I’m trying. Service is top notch. Want to find out?”
Hearing his low, teasing voice, she walked over to the window and looked down. There he was, tall and unmistakable, standing under the streetlight with something in his hand.
Madeline gripped the phone tighter. “No need. I’m not hungry. I was just about to leave anyway.”
