Madeline swept the flashlight across the floor and froze. There was Lucy, sprawled out and barely clinging to life. Madeline’s breath caught. “Mrs. Grayson!”
Lucy lay motionless, her strength all but gone. She opened her eyes and saw Madeline, terror flooding her face. Madeline rushed to her side and quickly checked the wound. It wasn’t deep. Whoever had done this had pulled their punch. The cut wasn’t in a dangerous spot, so she’d live.
Focused on patching up the injury, Madeline missed the panic in Lucy’s eyes. Lucy’s hand trembled as she grabbed a fistful of Madeline’s shirt, her grip desperate and tight. Madeline glanced down, confused.
“Help... help... kill... don’t touch me... get away... just go...” Lucy’s voice was barely above a whisper, but she kept trying to scream.
Madeline hesitated. Lucy looked absolutely petrified of her.
“Mrs. Grayson, it’s okay. I’m here to help. I’m not going to hurt you.” Madeline tried to calm her down, thinking Lucy was just overwhelmed by fright. It only made things worse. Lucy’s fear turned to wild panic and she shoved Madeline away with what little energy she had left.
Madeline didn’t get it at all.
Suddenly, she caught a faint sound behind her. Someone was approaching. Her body went tense. A heavy stick came swinging out of nowhere. She twisted out of the way, turning the flashlight toward the attacker’s face. Faces emerged from the shadows, men she didn’t recognize, all dressed in black.
Her first thought was that these were Helene’s people, but then the light slid over and she spotted Helene, unconscious on the ground. Lucy was in a wheelchair and already hurt. There was no way she could have knocked Helene out. Besides, the men didn’t even glance at Helene. Clearly, they weren’t with her.
So who were they? Other than Helene, Madeline couldn’t think of anyone who’d go this far. Then it hit her—maybe it was the mysterious person who poisoned her.
Madeline stayed limp in the backseat, mind spinning. Why kidnap her just to blow the story up online? What did they stand to gain? What was the real plan?
Before she could figure it out, the car started moving.
Three hours later, Julian finally made it back to the Capital. He’d heard it all over the phone. Madeline had been taken, and now her location had vanished. Panic clawed at his chest.
His phone rang. It was Christian. Anxiety flickered across Julian’s face as he answered. His grandfather’s voice thundered through the line, full of anger.
“You’re back in the Capital, right? Get to the hospital. Now.”
