Julian’s presence filled the entire room, making it impossible for Madeline to get any real sleep. She tossed and turned, careful not to make any noise that might give her away.
“Can’t sleep? Maybe you need a little action,” Julian teased from the darkness.
Madeline froze, holding her breath. She didn’t dare move.
Julian let out a quiet laugh, clearly amused but also a little exasperated.
Christian was also wide awake that night, the weight of everything that had happened pressing down on him. He still couldn’t believe what Julian had done. Not only had he stood up for Madeline, but he had gone straight to the media, basically shouting to the entire world that he believed she was innocent.
Christian had been so furious he’d enforced the family’s strictest rules, and the anger left him with a pounding headache that nearly sent him to the hospital.
George brought over a fresh cup of tea, his voice gentle and worried. “Sir, please, you need to calm down. Don’t let this get to you. Your health comes first.”
“How am I supposed to calm down? He’s the future head of the Grayson family. How can he lose his head over a woman like this? I would rather he kept Helene close, rather than someone like Madeline who makes him completely irrational.”
Christian rubbed his temples, deep lines of worry creasing his face.
“Where is he now?” he asked, his voice tight.
George hesitated, lowering his gaze. “Well…”
Christian sighed heavily. “There’s nowhere else he’d go. He’s with her. He’s smart, I’ll give him that much. He’s hidden her away so well, no one can find her.”
Talking about it only made his anger worse.
George gently patted his back, trying to soothe him. “Maybe he has his own reasons.”
Christian closed his eyes, his face looking more tired than ever. “His only reason is to find proof that she’s innocent. That’s all he cares about.”
George didn’t dare say more.
Christian propped his head up with one hand and let out a deep, frustrated sigh. “Alright, you can go.”
“It was me,” Claire said calmly.
Christian’s eyes narrowed. “So it really was you. Claire, are you out of your mind?”
“Grandfather, don’t worry. Mother’s fine, isn’t she? I held back, I never meant to really hurt her. She suffered a little, but you have to admit, it worked, didn’t it?”
“What exactly do you want?”
Even Christian was lost now, unable to guess what Claire was up to.
“Grandfather, have you ever heard of the Ballard family?” Claire asked, her voice steady.
The mention of that name made Christian’s face change. “You mean the Ballard family from the Capital?”
“That’s right. After years of looking into it, I found out something interesting. Madeline’s mother, the woman you hate—Shelly—she’s the head of the Ballard family.”
