“How about you fill me in on this whole assault thing? What’s going on now?”
“What do you think? Christian still wants the police to lock you up, and Julian’s handling it. You’re safer here than out there. It’s not just Christian anymore. There’s another group asking around about you.”
Madeline frowned a little. “Another group? Any idea who they are?”
“We’re still looking into it. They’re probably not the friendly kind. Seriously, how do you always manage to attract so much attention?”
Casey just took his time with the teacup, sipping like he had all day.
Madeline grabbed a cushion from behind her, hugged it tight, propped her chin on top, and let out a long sigh. “Maybe you should just bury me already. I’m exhausted.”
She gave a tired, hopeless smile. Who did she even offend? Why did everyone have it out for her?
Casey laughed. “Not a bad plan. Let me go scout out a nice spot for you and I’ll get back to you.”
He got up, clearly ready to leave.
Madeline straightened up. “You’re just going to walk away?”
“You want me to sit here and gossip with you instead?”
“Bye.”
No one seemed interested in helping her escape, so Madeline just pulled a blanket over her face.
Casey didn’t even look back. He left as casually as he arrived.
Madeline took a slow breath in, then let it out. She had a feeling that even if someone buried her right now, she wouldn’t be able to rest until all of this was sorted out.
By lunchtime, Madeline was so obviously bored and out of sorts that Celia decided to take her out for a walk around the little town nearby.
The little seaside town was a bit of a trek from Celia’s inn, which was honestly in the middle of nowhere.
The wind whipped Madeline’s hair around, and she glanced at Celia. “Did you and your husband open the inn way out here just for the peace and quiet?”
Celia nodded. “Yeah, we both love it. The inn’s just something to do. We’re not worried about money, so we just do what makes us happy.”
Madeline smiled. “I’m kind of jealous. You two seem really happy.”
Celia’s lips curled up. “You’ll find your happiness too. Your ex-husband really loves you, you know. I see it from the way he looks at you. You can’t fake that. I hope you two work things out. You deserve happiness.”
Madeline pressed her lips together and let out a soft laugh. “Thank you.”
They rode for about two hours, just taking it easy. With nothing else to do, neither of them was in a hurry and the ride felt easy.
The town faced the sea, with no tall buildings in sight. Most of the houses had this charming, old-fashioned vibe, and the locals had this relaxed, easygoing way about them that made everything feel lighter.
