Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 501

The three elders nodded at once. Maxwell turned to Claire and asked, “Did you bring the pendant? If you did, can I take a look?”

Claire’s lips curled into a soft, confident smile. “I did. One moment, please.”

Madeline’s brows knit together. A pendant? Her mind raced straight to the moon-shaped pendant. Before she could even finish the thought, Claire reached into her pocket and pulled out a piece of pristine white opal, shaped like a crescent moon.

As soon as the pendant appeared, the elders’ eyes lit up with recognition.

Maxwell stepped forward and Claire handed him the pendant. He held it up to the light, studying it carefully. The other two elders joined him, each inspecting it in turn.

Claire looked on, calm and self-assured, her gaze drifting over to Madeline. The look in her eyes said it all. You’re finished.

Madeline had never actually seen the pendant before. Grandma Monroe had always kept it close, never letting it fall into anyone else’s hands. But judging from the way the elders reacted, there was no doubt the pendant was real.

Grandma Monroe had told her the pendant was lost. Did that mean this woman had taken it? But how would she even know about the pendant’s existence? How did she get into the Monroe home, and once inside, how did she get her hands on it?

Even if she’d managed to sneak in by pretending to be Madeline, there was still the question of how she knew where the pendant was hidden. Grandma Monroe had said it was locked up in a safe. Without the combination, how could she possibly have gotten it out?

A thousand questions swirled in Madeline’s mind, tangling tighter with every passing second.

Maxwell finally nodded. “This is it. There’s no doubt.”

Claire’s lips curved into a confident smile. “Good. So doesn’t that prove I’m the real one, and she’s the imposter?”

Claire smiled like it was no big deal. “Grandma gave it to me, of course.”

Madeline frowned, trying to figure out if she was telling the truth. Unless someone had given it to her, there was no way she could have gotten the pendant out of that safe.

But if Grandma Monroe had mistaken Claire for her, if she’d really handed over the pendant, then when Madeline had asked about it, her grandmother should have just said, “I gave it to you.” Not that it was lost.

So Grandma Monroe had lied to her about the pendant.

Madeline felt her heart sink, heavy as lead. Even Grandma was helping someone else? Why? If what she was thinking was true, then what did all those years of love and care mean? Was it all just fake?

Claire caught the look on Madeline’s face and arched an eyebrow, her smile turning even more smug and taunting.
