Julian frowned. “You bought me a cake?”
Oliver nodded, setting the cake on the sofa before scrambling up after it. The sofa was a bit high, and since he’d put on a little weight lately, climbing up took some effort.
Julian watched as the little guy used both hands and feet to get up, looking awkward and adorable all at once.
“Of course. It’s a surprise for you,” Oliver declared proudly.
“You ditched your bodyguards just to buy this?”
Oliver hesitated for a split second, then nodded even harder. “Yep, I did it just for you, Daddy. If you knew, it wouldn’t be a surprise, right?”
While he talked, Oliver opened the cake box, scooped out a big spoonful, and held it up to Julian’s mouth.
“Daddy, try it. It’s really sweet, you’ll love it.”
Julian raised his brows, the coldness on his face slowly melting away. He started to refuse. “I don’t eat swe—”
But Oliver didn’t care what Julian liked. He just stuffed the cake right into Julian’s mouth.
So picky, Oliver thought. He won’t eat this, won’t eat that. Mommy always said picky eaters aren’t good kids.
Oliver made a little face, annoyed on his mommy’s behalf. When he was little, his own mom must have been just as frustrated with him. Hmph.
The cream was ridiculously sweet, almost too much to handle. Julian didn’t like it, but he still swallowed the bite, looking a bit awkward.
Oliver watched him with hopeful eyes.
“Daddy, is it good?”
It was the first time the kid had ever tried to be this close, even feeding him. Julian met his son’s eager gaze, and for once, the icy look on his face softened. There was a warmth there that almost never showed.
Miles watched from the side, eyes wide, heart pounding. Julian never had sweets. And now Noah had forced him to.
Was he about to get caught up in Julian’s bad mood? Miles braced himself, expecting an outburst.
A soft, familiar voice called behind her.
Madeline turned and saw ‘Oliver’ standing there. She blinked in surprise, then hurried over. “Oliver, how are you here?”
Noah looked up at her, trying not to smile too big. He couldn’t help himself—he rushed right into her arms.
“Mommy.”
Madeline gently patted his back, still confused. “What’s wrong, Oliver?”
Noah shook his head. “Nothing, Mommy. I just missed you. So I asked Uncle Casey to have someone bring me here. Don’t worry, I promise I won’t cause any trouble.”
Oliver had told him exactly what to say.
Madeline hugged him tight, letting out a helpless sigh. She’d meant to scold him for coming on his own, but after hearing him talk like that, how could she stay mad?
“Mommy, are you mad that I came without telling you?”
