“We meet again.” The voice was cool, almost whisper-soft.
Madeline pushed herself to her feet, smoothed out the front of her dress, then looked straight at the woman in front of her. Claire.
“Yeah, looks like fate’s not done with us yet, Claire.”
A slow smile spread across Claire’s lips. “Claire? What are you talking about? I’m Madeline.” She just watched Madeline, her eyes dancing with mock innocence.
Madeline didn’t blink. “Come on. It’s just us here—and your entourage. No need to pretend, right?”
Claire gave a light, wicked laugh. “Guess there’s no point keeping it up now. Honestly, you won’t be around much longer, so the name Madeline will just belong to me from now on. Yes, I’m Claire. Now you know. What are you going to do about it?”
A tiny, cold grin touched Madeline’s mouth. Claire didn’t notice the miniature camera quietly recording everything for Oliver back at his computer.
“The antidote,” Madeline said, her voice steady.
Claire leaned back in her chair, resting her chin on her hand. She watched Madeline, almost lazy—almost bored. “Why so eager? It’s just an antidote. I’ve got plenty. As long as you’re ready to give me what I want… you can have as much as you like.”
Madeline narrowed her eyes, her patience thinning. “I’m here, so, aren’t you already in control?”
Claire’s lips curled. “At least you understand where you stand.”
“I have to admit… I’m still curious. Why pick me? There are women out there who are prettier or richer. Why was I the one that caught your eye?”
What did Claire mean? How could Madeline’s mother have caused Julian’s father’s death? What had actually happened?
“You know, I was in that car when he died. My adoptive father was right there next to me,” Claire spat. Her hand shot out, fingers wrapping tight around Madeline’s throat. She stared at Madeline, eyes wild, her whole body shaking with fury. “If it wasn’t for your mother, he would still be alive. He would have just dropped me at school, not turned the car around for her. If he’d never gone to the airport, there wouldn’t have been a crash. Without that crash, he wouldn’t be dead and my face wouldn’t have been destroyed. It was all Shelly’s fault. All of it.”
Pain and confusion tangled on Madeline’s face as she struggled beneath Claire’s grip. “You’re saying my mother killed Julian’s father?” Her voice was strained. “You got any proof?”
“My proof is that I was in that car. I heard everything, every word of their call. That should be enough for anyone. He was only going to the airport to help Shelly. If he didn’t turn back, the accident wouldn’t have happened. If there’d been no accident, he’d be alive and my face wouldn’t be ruined. This is all on Shelly. I swear, I’m going to make her pay for it.”
Claire yanked her hand away. She looked Madeline up and down, her voice turning cold with satisfaction. “That’s why I did it. I changed my face to look like you, got close to your mother, tortured her, took everything from you and your family. Look around, Madeline. I’ve won. Right now, I have you right where I want you. I can crush you at any time.”
