“This way, miss.” The servant’s voice was polite but left no room for hesitation. Claire found herself rooted to the spot, her fingers curling tightly into her palm. There was no escaping today. She drew in a shaky breath, forcing herself to keep it together.
Shelly gave her a gentle wave, inviting her closer.
Claire pushed all her feelings down, slapped on her bravest face, and walked forward.
The moment she reached Shelly, her eyes grew glassy with tears. Her lips quivered, and her voice trembled, sounding breathless and overwhelmed. “Mom?”
Shelly stood up, looking Claire up and down with a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes.
“Mom, is it really you? You’re back... I’m not dreaming, am I?” The tears finally spilled over as Claire threw herself into Shelly’s arms, sobbing helplessly. “Mom, I missed you so much. I’ve been so worried. You have no idea.”
Her tears fell, one after another, as if nothing could stop them.
Between her sobs, she poured out her longing for Shelly, putting on the performance of her life.
But Shelly’s face was unreadable, her expression cold and still.
Shelly let Claire cry it out, holding her for a little while before gently easing her away.
Claire blinked quickly, keeping her eyes damp as she glanced up, only to meet Shelly’s steady gaze. There was something sharp there, and it made Claire flinch, her own eyes dropping to the floor.
Shelly narrowed her eyes, paying close attention to Claire.
Just then, Maxwell came back from his call. He looked a little tense, but as soon as he saw everyone in the room, he masked his worry and made his way over to Shelly. He leaned in and whispered to her in a low voice that only she could hear.
A chill flickered through Shelly’s eyes, but she just replied softly, “Got it,” and turned her attention back to Claire.
Shelly’s gaze didn’t waver. Claire stared back for a moment, then widened her eyes like a startled child. “Mom, what’s wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?”
Shelly managed a small smile. “It’s nothing. It’s just been so long since I last saw you. I’m over the moon.”
Hearing this, Claire’s heart eased a bit. She slid her hand into Shelly’s and led her over to sit down.
“Come sit, Mom. Where have you been all these years? When you left, you just disappeared. I... I thought you might really be gone.” She pulled out a pendant from her purse, holding it gently. “I’ve kept this ever since. Every time I missed you, I’d look at it and wish you would come back. I never thought my wish would come true.”
