The mother and daughter stepped in like they’d just waltzed out of a glossy magazine spread. The older woman wore a brand new designer dress, every accessory thoughtfully chosen, with her makeup done to absolute perfection. She carried a bag that costs more than what most people make in a year.
The younger woman had picked a classy, Chanel-inspired suit. Her makeup was bright, her chestnut waves looked like they took an hour to style, and she was—the only word for it—gorgeous.
None of this glam came from their own wallets. Every bit of it was paid for with Ray’s money.
Calling themselves “awful” or “can’t sleep” was just laughable.
Under Shelly’s gaze, both of them started to squirm, as if she could see right through them, secrets and all.
Shelly gave a soft, contemptuous laugh and looked away.
Ray frowned. He glanced at Shelly, then spoke in a low voice, “You two don’t have to leave. She’s just...difficult sometimes. Don’t mind her.”
Shelly shot him a sharp side glance. “You too. Get out with them.”
Julian came out, steadying Madeline on his arm. “Mom, who else is here?”
Shelly stood up and crossed the room. “Nobody that matters. Don’t worry about it.”
From inside the bathroom, Madeline had caught every word. She didn’t recognize the voices, but it was obvious from Shelly’s tone that she wasn’t thrilled to see them.
Jane approached, her face arranged in a gentle, practiced smile as she took Madeline’s hand. “You must be Madeline. You really do look just like Shelly.”
Madeline gave a polite, detached smile and gently pulled her hand away. “Sorry, ma’am, but we’re not acquainted.”
Jane’s smile froze for just a second. Years of forced politeness kicked in, and she quickly recovered. “Alianna, come say hello. This is Madeline, Shelly’s daughter. Alianna? Alianna...”
When Jane turned back, Alianna was gazing spellbound at Julian.
Alianna pressed her lips together, staring hard. He was striking: dark brows, a proud nose, and eyes as deep as midnight. Even the set of his mouth said, “Don’t come close.”
Jane reached for Alianna’s arm, face turning awkward.
“Mom, did you have breakfast yet?”
“I did. You go ahead.”
“Okay.”
Miles had brought enough food for everyone. Julian poured a bowl of soup for Madeline, but she reached out stubbornly. She couldn’t let Julian baby her forever.
“Careful, it’s hot,” Julian warned, passing her the bowl with steady hands.
Miles hesitated, clearly with news. He leaned closer to Julian and whispered, “Boss, Claire’s not eating or drinking. She’s saying she has to see you.”
Julian didn’t even break his rhythm, peeling an egg for Madeline. “That’s her choice. Just make sure she stays alive, and keep her from hurting herself.”
Miles understood exactly what Julian meant. When he said “hurting herself,” he was really talking about Claire’s eyes.
