Shelly blinked back her tears. “Yeah. As long as we stick together, everything’s going to be alright.”
“But Mom, before Claire was adopted by the Graysons, she was from the Freeman family. How could she be Drew’s daughter?”
Shelly didn’t even flinch. “My marriage to Drew was just a deal. I gave him money, built up his social standing, opened doors for the Monroe family. In exchange, I got a respectable marriage... and you.”
She paused, her expression calm. “Honestly, I’m not shocked about Claire’s real identity. Drew had plenty of women on the side back then. A few illegitimate kids here and there? Completely believable. I knew about it, but you were so little. I kept it from you.”
Madeline nodded slowly, pieces falling into place. So, it made sense... no wonder she wasn’t Drew’s biological daughter.
“Mom... then who is my real dad?”
Shelly went quiet for a second. “Do you really want to know who your father is?”
Madeline could hear the sadness in her mother’s voice. Maybe this was something Shelly didn’t want to revisit.
She shook her head. “No. As long as I have you, that’s enough for me. Having a father doesn’t matter anymore.”
Shelly gave a small, strained smile.
“Let’s not talk about this, Mom. I actually have something good to tell you,” Madeline said, eager to shift the mood.
Shelly looked up, hopeful. “What is it?”
“You’re already a grandma. I’m a mom now... to two little boys. Noah and Oliver. They’re both sweet and so well-behaved. You have to meet them. They’d love you right away.”
Madeline’s whole face softened with a quiet, happy glow as she spoke about her sons.
Shelly’s eyes lit up. “Are you serious?”
Madeline smiled. “I am.”
Shelly smiled, thinking about meeting her grandsons for the first time. She also couldn’t help but worry about Madeline going through everything alone. She’d been wanting to go to the Capital anyway.
“I’ll come to the Capital, but I won’t move in with you. I’ll get my own place.”
Madeline nodded, content. She leaned into her mother’s arms, seeking comfort. “Mom, about Julian’s father...”
Shelly let out a soft breath. “It’s a long, complicated story. I’ll tell you everything when I get the chance. Just don’t listen to what people say. We were just friends. That’s all.”
Madeline hesitated, then said quietly, “I don’t think Brian’s death was just an accident.”
Shelly’s face clouded over. “Why do you say that?”
“Last night at the party, when Claire was talking to everyone, she suddenly blurted out something about the car losing control. The Graysons, they’re loaded, right? Their cars must get checked all the time. How could it just lose control... for no reason?”
