Miles wasn’t sure what was going on, but he did exactly what Julian told him.
Josh hurried out of the car, carefully guiding Madeline. She took a couple of quick steps, not realizing there were stairs in front of her. Josh didn’t warn her quickly enough, and she tripped, hitting the ground hard.
“Shit.” Josh’s eyes went wide as he rushed over. “Madeline, I’m so sorry. I forgot about the steps. Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Don’t blame yourself. I just forgot, for a second, that I’m blind.”
Heavy footsteps sounded behind them. Julian appeared, a stormy look darkening his face. He scooped Madeline up swiftly.
“Julian?”
Just as Madeline whispered his name, he steadied her and made sure she was standing upright.
Julian knelt down, gently lifting the edge of her pant leg to check her knee. Old bruises mixed with new scrapes painted a heartbreaking picture.
His eyes narrowed at the sight.
And it wasn’t just her knee. Her shin was covered in bruises too, probably from bumping into things when no one was there to help her.
Julian’s face hardened, but his eyes softened with worry and something deeper, something raw.
Madeline tugged her pants back down. “Really, it’s fine. I’ll put some ointment on it later. Just stand up, okay? I want to ask you something.”
“Did you get into a fight with Christian?”
Josh had already filled her in during the car ride. It was kind of obvious, given how furious Julian was. No surprise things blew up between him and Christian.
Julian didn’t say a word. His eyes just stayed locked on Madeline’s face, like he couldn’t look away.
He stared at her, some kind of pain tightening in his chest, making it hard to breathe.
“Julian, can you say something?”
Madeline stepped back a little. “What?”
Julian lowered his eyes, tracing every line of her face as if trying to memorize it. His hand brushed softly over her brow, his voice low and gentle. “From now on, I guess I’ll have to depend on you to look after me. Just don’t think less of me.”
“What does that mean?”
It took her a second, but then it clicked. Julian had already transferred almost everything to her—except, maybe, some shares in Grayson Enterprises, which were probably gone now that he and Christian had fallen out.
So that meant…
Julian was actually broke? The idea of Julian and broke in the same sentence made her want to laugh, even though the situation wasn’t funny at all.
“See? I told you you shouldn’t have given me everything. Now look at you. Totally broke.”
If Madeline could have seen his face, she would have noticed how Julian was looking at her—like he couldn’t get enough, like he wanted to remember her forever, just in case this moment was the last one they’d ever have.
