All Brenda knew was that Julian wanted to give Madeline his corneas, and he was doing it because he wanted to. That alone was enough for her to stand her ground, no matter what.
“Yes, Julian’s the CEO of Grayson Enterprises. So what? That makes him royalty? You said it yourself, Madeline already gave him a kidney. So she’s allowed to risk her life for him, but he can't do one thing for her? I don’t care what you say, I’m not moving.”
Josh’s face was turning red, his voice tight with frustration. “You’re impossible. Brady, call Christian. Tell him to get here. Now.”
Brady nodded, voice calm but determined. “Already did. He’s on his way.”
Right then, Brenda’s phone buzzed. The second she saw who it was, she grabbed it like a lifeline and hit answer.
Josh reached for Brenda, trying to pull her back, but she clung to her phone and shouted, “I’m telling you, both of you, I’m pregnant with Mitch’s baby! If you touch me, I’ll start screaming that you’re attacking a pregnant woman. See how the hospital security likes that.”
Josh’s hand froze in midair.
Brenda stuck out her belly, almost daring either of them to even try.
A few tense seconds ticked by, then Josh’s face hardened. He clenched his jaw and, not exactly gentle, yanked Brenda aside.
“Mitch, help! They’re trying to kill your baby!”
On the other end, the man could hear her shrieking. He could practically picture her waving her arms, causing drama. He let out a lazy laugh. “You’re pregnant with my kid now?”
He stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray. The woman curled up beside him got the hint and stood up. “Where are you going, Mitch?”
“Ah! Mitch, save me!” Brenda’s voice blared through the phone.
Mitch shrugged into his jacket, a crooked smile on his lips. “I’m off to rescue my, child.”
The nurse shrank back, her face full of confusion. “Sir, the consent forms were signed before we began. What is going on?”
Josh clenched his teeth so hard his jaw twitched. His gaze was glued to the closed operating room doors as he reached for the handle.
He was out of patience. A second longer and Julian would really lose his sight.
Brenda threw herself in his way, blocking him with all she had.
“Move. Last warning. Don’t make me use force.”
Josh had always been one of the city’s golden boys. If you didn’t get on his bad side, he was easy to get along with. But push him, and he threw all that gentleman act out the window.
He lifted his hand, ready to shove Brenda aside. She huddled into herself, bracing for a hit, but she didn’t budge, not even a step.
