Helene’s expression turned serious as she raised her voice. “Madeline, you’ve gone too far. No matter what, she’s still your elder. How could you push her on purpose?”
Madeline shot back, “Are you two blind? Didn’t you see she was grabbing onto me?”
“You could have just stopped. You knew Mrs. Grayson was holding you back, but you kept walking anyway. What were you thinking?”
Madeline let out a laugh, her patience gone. “So just because she won’t let me go, I’m supposed to stand there and take it? What, does she think she’s my mother now?”
Helene was fuming. “Unbelievable. Julian, you can’t let this slide.”
She clung to the accusation like she’d finally found something to use against Madeline and refused to let it go.
Lucy clutched her knee and whined about the pain.
Julian’s eyes were icy as he looked at Madeline.
Madeline didn’t flinch. She knew she hadn’t done anything wrong, so she felt zero guilt.
“Julian…” she started.
“We’re going to the hospital,” Julian said, his voice cold.
“No, I don’t want to go to the hospital!” Lucy grabbed his hand, taking a couple of shaky breaths, acting like she was in agony.
“Julian, do you see what kind of person she is? She’s cruel, she’s shameless, she’ll do anything to get her way. She’s nothing compared to Helene. I want you to kick her out of the city and never let her come back.”
Helene’s eyes lit up with hope as she glanced at Julian, her excitement barely hidden.
That’s right. Just get rid of Madeline for good.
Brenda couldn’t listen anymore. She stepped forward, her voice sharp with anger. “Kick someone out? Who do you think you are, the king of this place? You can’t just do whatever you want.”
The argument was loud enough to draw a crowd. People started gathering, curious to see what was happening. Brenda turned to them and raised her voice. “Everyone, check this out. This woman grabbed my friend and tried to pin the blame on her when she fell. Now she is gonna extort us for it. There are cameras everywhere. We all know who’s really at fault.”
Lucy’s pride stung. She, a high society lady, was surrounded by onlookers and being accused of faking a fall. It was humiliating.
“Are you calling me a faker?” Lucy spat through clenched teeth.
Julian pulled out some tissues and wiped his hand, his expression unreadable. He looked at the group, his voice low. “Are you done with this?”
Helene rushed to explain. “Julian, all Mrs. Grayson wants is for you to…”
Julian shot her a look. “Still not enough for you?”
Sensing his anger, Helene’s heart sank.
“I just wanted to stand up for her,” she mumbled.
Lucy couldn’t take the stares any longer. Her voice was heavy as she said, “Helene, let’s go.”
“Mrs. Grayson, weren’t you going to make them kick Madeline out?” Helene asked, unwilling to back down.
But Lucy was set on leaving. Helene had no choice but to help her, her eyes burning with resentment as she pushed the wheelchair away.
Lucy muttered under her breath, “Don’t worry. We’ll have plenty of chances to deal with that bitch.”
