The soup was already cold.
Helene was quick to explain, “It must be the thermos. I think it’s broken, that’s why the soup’s gone cold.”
Julian set the bowl down on the table. The sound made Helene jump.
She dropped her gaze, looking defeated and guilty. “I’m sorry, Julian. I’m so dumb. I can’t seem to do anything right.”
“You’re not dumb. You just don’t care,” Julian replied, his voice flat and cold as he shot her a look.
He wasn’t stupid. The moment he picked up the bowl, he could tell the soup was cold. Helene had been carrying it around long enough to know as well. Yet she still tried to make Noah drink it, pretending nothing was wrong.
Julian let out a bitter laugh and shook his head. He knew all about the grudge between Helene and Madeline. He didn’t expect Helene to truly care for Madeline’s son, but she could have at least tried to act like she did.
“Leave,” Julian said, his tone sharp. “And don’t come to see Noah again.”
Helene’s face tightened. “Julian, I swear, the thermos was broken, so—”
“Leave,” Julian repeated, his voice firm and final.
Helene pressed her lips together. Julian sounded so cold, and she knew there was no point in arguing. She shot a glare at Noah lying in the hospital bed and mumbled, “Rest up, Noah. I will visit you again.”
Then she stormed out, seething. This was all Noah’s fault. Was he cursed or something? He always managed to get her yelled at by Julian.
Now the room was quiet with just Julian and Noah. Julian told the bodyguard to go buy some fresh, light food.
He turned to Noah. “It’s just us now. Tell me, why did you run out last night? Or, if you want, tell me what happened at home.”
Noah pressed his lips together. He wasn’t about to admit he snuck out to find a private place to contact Oliver. As for what happened at home, he wanted to tell Julian how those two ladies had bullied him. But the words stuck in his throat.
Seeing Madeline standing there made Helene’s expression turn even more sour. “Madeline. What are you doing here?”
Madeline had wanted to wait until the coast was clear before checking on Noah. She hadn’t expected Helene to come out so soon.
Madeline’s face was calm. “You don’t own the hospital, do you? Why shouldn’t I be here?”
Helene crossed her arms. “I haven’t even dealt with you about last night. What was with that phone call? Were you trying to rub it in my face that Julian was with you?”
Madeline’s expression turned cold. “You’re reading too much into it. Unlike you, I actually have things to do.”
Helene moved closer, eyes sharp. “I’m gonna warn you one more time, Madeline. Stop going after things that don’t belong to you.”
Madeline looked her straight in the eye, a slow smile tugging at her lips. “You must feel pretty insecure with Julian if you’re so scared someone else will take him from you.”
