These girls had to be kidding. Maybe they needed their eyes checked, because all she saw was a grim reaper straight out of hell.
Right as Madeline thought that, the man’s gaze snapped to her, sharp as if he’d heard her thoughts. Their eyes met, and for a second she just stood there, frozen. The noise around her faded to nothing.
He wore a jet-black tailored suit that looked expensive even from a distance. The streetlights caught on his broad shoulders and tall frame, highlighting every line. Thick brows, a strong nose, lips pressed in a line that looked anything but friendly. His eyes were so dark, so intense, she felt like she could fall in and never hit the bottom.
He was staring her down, not blinking, his gaze narrowing in a way that made her skin prickle with warning.
Madeline shook herself out of it. She wasn’t about to lie to herself. Julian was unfairly attractive, with that cold, natural elegance and the kind of intense energy that could make a girl forget her own name. Still, right now, he looked icy and furious. His face all but screamed that he wanted everyone to leave him alone.
Honestly, if she was being real, he looked a lot more like something that came to drag people to the underworld.
Julian didn’t move, but he lifted a hand and crooked his finger at her. “Come here.”
He seriously expected her to just go over?
Madeline’s mood was already a mess from earlier, thanks to the drama with her kid. She was still simmering with anger, and honestly, Julian was the last person she wanted to see. She turned on her heel, ready to leave through another door.
Julian’s scowl deepened. Before his bodyguards could step in and block her, Madeline stopped. She took a steadying breath, pushing her frustration down.
“Ms. Monroe, Mr. Grayson asks that you come over,” one of the men said, the words clipped and cold. The word “ask” was a joke. There was nothing polite about any of this.
She hadn’t planned for this. Julian was totally sober, and there was no way she was letting him into her place now. That would be way too risky. He might find out about Oliver.
“My place is off-limits. Just the two of us, it’s not appropriate,” Madeline said flatly.
“Not appropriate? Yesterday it was appropriate, but today it isn’t?” His voice was tight with irritation.
Suddenly, he reached out and pulled her into his arms.
The move was so fast, Madeline barely had time to react. Her body collided with his, her heart stuttering in her chest. People around them gasped, and the shock of his touch sent adrenaline surging through her. She braced herself and tried to shove him away.
