[Mr. Yates, I'm so sorry about running off like that yesterday. But I've already explained everything clearly to my friend. Whenever you're free, I'd love to explain the details to you in person.]
[I really have absolutely nothing to do with him. Mr. Yates, he's completely insane and just won't leave me alone.]
Miles let out a cold scoff. The memory of Lucian sitting across from him flashed in his mind—the guy was far from the lunatic Joanne made him out to be.
He left her on read.
Amber returned to the library. Vance hadn't memorized a single question.
Amber was about to scold him when Vance suddenly asked, "Amber, do you like Mr. Madison?"
Amber almost bit her tongue. "What?"
"I saw everything. Were you two really discussing business? You looked exactly like two really close friends just hanging out. And you were peeling crawfish for him, and he was serving you food! Amber, the chemistry between you two was off the charts. Are you really just a sponsor and a student?"
Amber rubbed her temples. Peeling crawfish for Sharif was pure muscle memory from her past life as his secretary. She hadn't expected Vance to be so observant. However...
"Why do you care? Of course we're just sponsor and student. Vance, has memorizing questions fried your brain? Why would someone of Mr. Madison's status ever look twice at me?"
"Stop letting your imagination run wild. If you have time to overthink, you have time to memorize more questions." Amber ordered him back to work, shutting down his theories.
But Vance was stubborn. "What if he does like you? Don't sell yourself short, Amber. You're amazing and incredibly smart. Mr. Madison is an elite, obviously his taste isn't terrible."
Amber rolled her eyes dramatically. "Clearly, I haven't given you enough test prep. You have way too much free time."
"Amber, just tell me the truth. Have you really never felt anything for someone as flawlessly perfect as Mr. Madison?"
To say absolutely nothing would be a lie, but to say yes wouldn't be accurate either—her focus simply wasn't on romance.
"Vance, this relentless interrogation tactic of yours is impressive. Please make sure you apply this exact persistence to your exams. Now, let me be very clear: I will absolutely not date until I become the wealthiest person alive."
*Crack.* Vance felt like he actually heard his own heart shatter.
"Isn't... isn't that a little extreme?"
"It has to be extreme. Men will only slow down how fast I make money. Are you satisfied? Now get back to your questions."
How could he be satisfied? He was more anxious than ever.
