Sure enough, Larry asked, "If she's going on dates, do you have suitable candidates in mind?"
By saying that, he was implicitly agreeing to end Elowen's confinement. Joy immediately lit up both Fiona's and Elowen's faces, though Elowen's excitement was far more obvious.
Fiona swiftly kicked her daughter under the table, shooting her a warning look to keep her composure.
Then, Fiona smiled. "I've picked out a few men from families with backgrounds similar to ours. They all have respectable careers, solid character, and upright morals. They're decently attractive, too. They're definitely worthy of our Elowen. Here, take a look at their profiles."
Fiona unlocked her phone and pulled up several detailed dossiers to show Larry.
The files were comprehensive, proving Fiona had been plotting this for a while. There was no way she could have gathered all this information overnight.
Larry scanned the screen. The families were indeed on par with the Sullivans. Marrying into any of them wouldn't be a step down for Elowen, nor would it look like she was desperately grasping above her station.
He had heard of a few of these men in passing; they were known to be hardworking and pragmatic. Their only downside was that they were rather average-looking.
While Elowen didn't possess Amara's stunning beauty, she was still pretty enough to be considered above average. These men, however, were thoroughly unremarkable in the looks department.
But Larry quickly reasoned that a man with drive and a career was far better than a trust-fund socialite who just lived off his parents—like Elowen currently did. Overall, they were solid matches.
He handed the phone back to Fiona. "These men seem fine. Find some time to arrange introductions for her."
With Larry's seal of approval, it was basically set in stone. By the time lunch was over, Elowen would be a free woman again.
Elowen was too dense and too distracted by her impending freedom to sense the trap. She was already happily plotting where she was going to go out that afternoon.
But Fiona felt her stomach drop.
Amara and Larry's relationship was stronger than ever. It wasn't odd for Amara to share things with him, but why bring it up at the dinner table?
Usually, when they had something important to discuss, they retreated to Larry's study. For Amara to bring something up right at this specific moment... Fiona's instincts screamed that it was about Elowen.
Forcing a stiff smile, Fiona said, "We're right in the middle of eating. Whatever it is, Amara, why don't you save it until we're finished? Bringing down the mood during a meal ruins the appetite."
