The sudden outburst caught Julian entirely off guard, and he stumbled back a few steps under Melody's aggressive pushing.
She didn't stop, continuing to shove him toward the door.
"Get out! Get out!"
"Get out! You're not allowed in here!"
Catching his balance, Julian steadied himself and stopped retreating.
"Melody..."
He bent down, reaching out to hold her and pick her up, but she wildly slapped his hands away.
"Don't touch me!"
Unable to push him any further, the frustration bubbling inside her finally reached its breaking point. Melody burst into heartbreaking sobs, stomping her feet in anger as she kept shoving and hitting him.
"I don't want you to touch me!"
"I don't want a daddy anymore!"
Her words drove a suffocating blade straight into Julian's chest. A wave of sharp pain paralyzed him, the strength draining from his body as Melody managed to push him back another few steps.
Crying and screaming, she continued to shove him. "Get out!"
"Get out!"
Terrified of upsetting her further, Julian stopped resisting and let her force him all the way to the door.
Melody was genuinely furious this time—it wasn't something a few sweet words could fix.
When he had seen the injury on Vivian's knee and waited at the hospital for her diagnosis, Julian hadn't thought about much else. His only focus had been making sure she was taken care of.
He knew Melody would be upset, but he had been confident he could coax her back into a good mood and win her forgiveness.
But faced with a hysterical, heartbroken daughter, Julian felt a crushing sense of panic and regret.
It was his daughter's birthday. How had he pushed her to this point?
She was his flesh and blood, a child he had doted on for years. The thought of being hated by her tore at him. In a panic, he looked to Elara for help. "Elara..."
"Melody is throwing a tantrum. If you're not going to calm her down, fine, but why are you encouraging this?"
Elara paused, as if she had just heard the most ridiculous joke in the world. She tilted her head slightly, shooting him an icy look, and scoffed.
"Don't you get it yet?"
Her tone was flat and utterly devoid of emotion, like she was simply stating a fact.
But Julian knew her well enough to recognize that the calmer Elara appeared, the angrier she truly was.
His heart skipped a beat, and he blurted out, "Get what?"
"You're the problem. As long as you're here, she's never going to calm down!"
Julian fell silent.
Elara glanced at his hand on the frame. "Move your hand. I'm closing the door."
Reflexively, Julian let go.
