The heavy door slammed shut right in front of his face, missing his nose by a hair.

Julian stood there in stunned silence for a few seconds before stepping back, his heart racing.

Just then, the door swung open again.

Behind it stood a tiny figure.

Melody had stopped wailing but was still sniffling. Clutching something tightly in her arms, she stared at him with red, tear-filled eyes.

Thinking she had calmed down enough to talk, Julian felt a surge of hope. "Mel-"

Before he could finish her name, a beautifully wrapped box flew through the air, slamming into his chest before clattering to the floor.

Julian recognized it immediately. It was one of the presents he had bought for her.

He froze, instinctively bending down to pick it up, only to see another shadow flying toward him from the corner of his eye.

Melody chucked a second gift out the door. The moment he looked up, it smacked him squarely in the face.

It was a large, flat, square box containing the custom-made traditional dress he had commissioned for her.

Months ago, Melody had fallen in love with historical dramas. Elara had bought her a few outfits, but the fabric irritated her skin so badly she had an allergic reaction.

Julian had hired a master embroiderer to custom-make a set out of pure silk for her.

They had rushed the order to finish one outfit in time for her birthday.

And now, his daughter was throwing it right back at him.

The heavy box smashed directly into his face.

"If you don't like him, you don't have to listen."

"You didn't do anything wrong. He's the one who messed up, so he has no right to yell at you."

Elara pressed her cheek against Melody's, whispering gentle logic to soothe her.

"He broke his promise and skipped your party for no reason. You warned him to leave, and he refused. He made the mistake, and he owes you an apology."

"You're the one who got hurt. You get to decide if you want to forgive him or not, and you have every right to be angry."

Kneeling on the floor, Elara brushed the tear-soaked hair from Melody's face and tucked it behind her ear. She kissed her forehead, smiling with endless patience and warmth.

"I think you did great today. I will always support you."
